When i head back to the factory today, i have to dig my ipod out of the trash.
what is it doing in the trash? Well, lets just say im not too happy with apple right now. I’ve had problems with this ipod for months. It has a tendency to crash itunes and itself on a regular basis, and will often ‘freeze’ when i plug it in, the hard drive whirring endlessly. Yesterday i forgot to check it when i plugged it in and went off to break down boxes for four hours and when i came back, the damn thing was hot as hell and had frozen both the computer and the ipod. After messing with it for a while, itunes just would not recognize it. I reset things, i reinstalled the software, did a hard drive check on the thing, and tried to reupload my music… and it just wont do it. it does about a gig then stops, and wont finish. I was so frustrated last night that i finally gave up and whucked it into the trash bin and went home.
It irks me that something that cost $250 bucks, that they push a big applecare plan on you (what is it, 50 bucks? 100?) for a MP3 player that is supposed to synch with your mac. I have a mac. If i was trying to synch this with a pc, i could understand, but there is no excuse for this thing to be so problematic. I don’t use it as much as many people do (i dont travel far to work, i have all my stuff right on my own computer, etc), whats the deal?
Anyways, i’ll try again, maybe see if i can refresh it better from my laptop. Hawk has me wondering if its a problem with my firewire port on my g4. I dunno, we’ll see.
I’m gonna try to tackle email today - a daunting task, but there really are a lot of emails i need to deal with. Even tho deadlines and stuff are behind me, if im not careful i could end up in another bind tomorrow on the comic and other stuff, and i dont want that.
Guu. I wish my ipod worked… If it really is borked, im gonna trash the hell out of this thing on the MT site. Probably shouldn’t, but grr…

Hey, good luck with the iPod. A couple of my friends have them and never had a problem. I alos asked them if they’re apple or just like the Ipod. All are PC, still no problem =/.
Meh…iPod’s confuse me. My friend at school has one, and she loves it…but I guess I could say I don’t really want one. I’m afraid I’d lose it… ^^;
Thay look reeeeellllllyyyy breakable too. Not good…^^;;
Er. o.o? Did you get Applecare? If so, I think it’s good for a year; if the iPod is indeed borked and you’ve had it less than that, they should be able to replace it. If you didn’t get Applecare, you can still pester their support line with troubleshooting questions and determine whether it’ll be the worth the bother of replacing — though I anticipate their first question will be something along the lines of, ‘Why didn’t you say something about it earlier?’ :}
Feel free to abuse either option depending how the FireWire port test goes. They were fairly gentle with me when my eMac developed a horrible raster shift and needed a brand-new board to fix it — then again, Apple only has licensed retailers here and no actual Apple store… -.-;;
Ours had a faulty power supply.. I hope we haven’t lost the pictures on it.
I’ve known quite a few people who have had issues with their ipods. Recently a friend of mine bought one and the battery died after 3 months. They just seem horridly unreliable, and I’ll never touch one. I’m going to eventually get myself a Neuros from http://www.neurosaudio.com . The interface isn’t as slick as the Ipod, but it’s a lot more stable with better features. It’s got a nice built in FM transmitter, and you can even record to it from a built in mic or from the input. The only down side is it’s a bit bigger than an Ipod, but that doesn’t bother me much.

Sorry Fred
Good Luck
Sorry to hear about your iPod problems.
If worst comes to worst, you can always autograph it and eBay it
I can’t really know what you’re going through Fred. Ya see, all computers and electronical devices love me. (They work without problems, and I can always finish what I’m trying to accomplish reletivly fast) I’m not really sure why this is, but I’m not one to question good eletronical charm.
Anyway, good luck with the test and the e-mails. The e-mails will probably take forever. (I have sent 2, I think the first one messed up though. Hence the sending of the second e-mail) Again, good luck. Till next blog, CYA!
Sorry about your iPod. I actually just got a replacement one in the mail yesterday. They sent me a new one even though it was somewhat out of warranty cuz they goofed on an AppleCare thing. Anyway, if you’re in warranty, they can replace it really fast, and if you’re out of warranty, try asking for customer relations and explain what’s going on. The whole “going to trash it in front of hordes of technology-literate readers” thing could give you some bargaining power if things don’t look good…
Just a tip: send the mail from piro@megatokyo.com and try to work in a little information about who you are and what you do/who reads your stuff.
I mean, a lot of people read your rants and if you post “the iPod sucks”, this is not gonna help the sales. But if you write “I’ve had problems, but the apple support was so kind to send me a new one” this gives a plus for apple in the readers mind.
You could for example say, that you “prefer to ask the qualified staff of apple before asking the visitors of my onlinecomic for help.”
Or something like that (the example is.. kinda too obvious).
Just show them that you have a “gun” but you would prefer not to be forced to use it.
If you’re really lucky, apple will go like “hey, free publicity” and send you one of the new photo iPods. But I don’t think this is likely. Actually, I’d be very surprised if it would happen.
My, that is terrible. The iPod I’ve got is pretty old (second generation if I recall correctly) and I haven’t had many problems (though I have crashed it a couple times - but it was never frozen for very long). I’m supprised I haven’t had the infamous battery life issues yet, but then again I’m pretty oblivious to that sort of thing until it gets really bad.
Anyway, I wish you good luck in getting it repaired. ^_^
Hey Hi…
This is unrelated to your Ipod but you might want to have your Movable Type demons take a look at the latest news (via Slashdot.org if naught else).
Seems there are some bugs and configuration issues that can really mess with server loads under the right conditions… preemptive medication is always better than disaster recovery.
already being looked at
Just havent done any setting changes yet
I hate to hear about your iPod too. I got a 3G 15GB iPod right before the new 4G ones started coming out and it’s working absolutely fine. What I (or rather my ex) did when he bought it was get the $39 plan from Best Buy that says if anything goes wrong with it within two years, they’ll replace the entire unit for free. We got it because of the battery issues. It might be worth getting the next one at Best Buy for that instead of paying Applecare for it, though I’ve not heard of many people having the problems you’ve been having.
Though, as a sidenote, partly due to the comic, my own idiosyncricies as a newspaper designer and other influences, I’m making the leap from PC to Mac within the upcoming week.
