Just posted some new sketches to the Fredart site. Both are truly ’sketches’ and are just some samples from my recent sketchbooks. Sketchy Sae is a VERY rough and loose sketch of Saeko that has something in it i can’t quite put my finger on… sometimes the drawings that do something for you aren’t the most technically proficient ones. The Eimi sketch i put in the dumpbox because to me it’s not as good. It’s a more finished drawing, but the Saeko sketch talks to me more… kinda hard to explain.
i really like the new post in the sketchbook. i get what your saying, you have done better… (i’ll say it to) but there is somthing really cool about it. its like its more lade back and its… i dont no, but if warmth was like that its totally different from megatokyo. and i think that it could be yet another comic that will stand out on its own, as far as art style goes, if you did use a art style like that for warmth.
test comment.
I took a look at those sketches you just posted. You were right about how “sketchy” they were, and though there was something about them that stand out, they were still missing something. Pretty sure you know what I mean.
But in regards to your last post, A CALENDAR!? Jeez… I still haven’t bought one for the new year. If you get them out sometime soon, I’d order it as soon as possible. My wall seems empty, sorta like all of my sketches. Heh, no wonder I’m stuck editing while my comicky partner does the art.
Still, keep sketching when you have the time. One of these days, you’ll hit it straight on, and you’ll “find” Saeko again.
gah… even the brainstorming sketchies look interesting. I’d only suggest pushing the envelope a bit so no one mistakes Warmth for Megatokyo: Part 2 on first glance… and the sketchies suggest you’re doing just that.
Here, have the rest of my karma points to help the servers. I made the tactical error of losing my temper in the forums today and for penance, I must watch more Kanon as it puddles in…. well… its *sort* of zen meditation…
Imperfections have character. I somethimes like uncleaned sketches as they tend to be more natural. The inspirations are still in the lines. I have taken a bunch of drawing classes, but still cant draw very well, but the best drawings of mine are ones done in about a minute. Just quick guestures. Im just rambling, I hope that makes some sense.
The sketchy saeko looks like something straight out of an FLCL manga! XD I really like it, and I wish you’d post more stuff out of your sketchbook. <3
Uhm, Warmth is different enough from Megatokyo that honestly i don’t think that many people will read it. I’ve been getting a lot of ‘be different! do something that isn’t just the same as megatokyo!” Warmth is nothing like Megatokyo, so be prepared to be dissapointed.
Re: the Saeko sketch — it’s her eyes and the set of her mouth that give her a slightly sad but wistful expression, complemented by her rumpled clothing and loose hair. At least, that’s what I see.
Btw, Fred — you *know* the next AIR is due out soon, so buckle down and finish things so you can watch it without any pressure.
Fred-sama, I’d bet any one a few thousand dollars (or maybe two dollars, because thats all I have) that many people will read Warmth, and that it will be poular. It may be different from Megatokyo, and some MT readers may dislike or even hate it, but even if you do a 180 you’ll just gain a new following. What you’ve shown is wonderfull, uniqe, and really interesting. I can’t see the future, and I don’t know your exact plans, but it would not surprise me if Warmth surpassed Megatokyo. Besides, I’d pay money, just to stare at more of your drawings.
Heh… That was a bit long. Sorry!
well… considering what I’ve seen of Warmth so far … I’m probably going to like it even more than I like MT. I’m not particularly a fan of the gaming elements (though they are funny) … for me, MT shines in the relationships and perceptive realities. If Warmth is anything in the vein of Kanon or the above elements I like about MT … I’ll be in line for it. I prefer “duh subtle” over “teh phunny”.
Actually, Fred, it’s far better that Warmth is going to be different from Megatokyo. If it ends up strongly resembling Megatokyo or keeping with the gag-based style I think more people are going to be infuriated with you than if you decide to go in a whole new direction. New directions are cool, it’s a whole fresh start for everyone and it means that you have the creative ability not to think solely in terms of Megatokyo.
I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but if everyone thought like me Warmth would be more popular than Megatokyo ^^
re Sketches: You’re right, there is something about that Saeko sketch that catches me and makes me like it. I don’t have the time or the patience to do a full-fledged analysis (phenomenology is fun! but tedious ^^;;), and I don’t think you’d like it if I did. Just know that you’re right, there is something there that isn’t in the other sketch (although, with a little work, I think that your pic of Eimi could have made it to the sketchbook section… but that’s your decision)
Wow, my computer’s getting really weird ^^##
I APOLOGIZE ABOUT THE TRIPLE (!) POST! No matter what I did my computer insisted that I had not added a single comment at all.
Sorry!
Actually, it came out as a quadpost… and adding your last comment… *counts fingers*
Anyways, I’m really a sucker for storyline, and since Warmth will have more planning behind it, I’m sure it will have a deeper/ more in-depth story than that of Megatokyo. Not saying I didn’t like the beginnings of Megatokyo when Largo helped with the comics. It’s just I’d rather prefer a comic with more story than something you read that doesn’t collaborate with each other, sort of like I’d prefer a game with a storyline than something more “Addictive”, like tetris… even if I play that every day in PreCalc…
The limitations of the blogging software means we have to be more lenient to transmit burps like that. I’d like to be able to edit some of my typos and spoonerisms but alas, alackaday…
Here’s hoping we get to see more sketchies.
Fred: are you going to plot out the story front to back before drawing or are you going to execute Warmth organically (draw-plot and see how the characters unfold as you go while keeping to certain milestones?).
In writing, I’ve tried both styles and they each have their merits.
OLD picture! but oh so good!
yeah…
If you want my opinion… DON’T ACT LIKE YOU DON’T!… I think you have a thing for vulnerability. It may or may not be a reflection of yourself, it may just be an attraction, whatever, I don’t think we need to pull up a couch. But the sketchy-sketch of Saeko is exposed and open. The lines aren’t tidy, her blouse is open, she’s looking into a breeze that’s blowing. I think it’s evocative (if impressionistic) and that’s good enough for me!
Hmm… and we wonder why she’s always cold… jk
i think the sketchy sae is really kawaii ^_^ i dont know if ur going for the lost look… but the sketch really capture that feel ^_^;
gambatte ne, piro-kun!
Finished listening to my first pass on the Air OST … um, wow.
Never thought I’d even like listening to some of the styles recorded here but … wow.
I particularly liked the acapella work on “aozura”(?) … sounds a lot like an old tune I liked from the 70s thats lurking at the edge of my tongue at the moment. …need more coffee…
well i feel sad, because i read alot of your storys you have posted and pictures, there really good! but all that time i didn’t give you a reply or a post, just saying i like your work!!
i’ll post more comment from now on, i think anything you write or draw is good and i mean that, i can’t wait for you to release ‘warmth’ i wonder what ‘crazy’ ideas you have for it.
for me i think more drama and romacne it in and a touch of nostalgia
that’s only my thoughts’
Hey I hope you really aren
*Regarding Warmth*
Ithink I can safely agree with everyone here. If it was an extension of MT, then it won’t be as good…
But, from what I have seen, the story to Warmth is looking akin to stories like Air and Kanon (just to pick two of the top of my head, not that I’m gonna compare them) and since so many people here seem to like these kinds of stories, I think that it’s going to do fine! Plus it’s allready go quite a large fan base!
Daijobu, daijobu!
I’m sure it’ll be fine!
Ja ne! Piro-kun! ^-^
HEY FRED!!!!
Thanks for making Megatokyo a story about adults…
I was beginning to be afraid this was going to be people acting OOC to avoid real issues but this episode is certainly headfirst and to the point.
Too bad Largo couldn’t have “saved game” before that question…
Quaker, I wouldn’t worry… Fred has never shown himself to be anything but discreet. If people do evolve into sleeping together, I would assume the most Fred might draw is two bleary “bedhair” people peering out of their blankets in the morn… hell… Erika and Largo are about the first two people to even “hold hands” in this comic (though usually it involved crushing bones).
urg.. I hate doubleposting here but as I have no edit function…
Track 9 and 18 on the Air OST… just figured out it reminds me of an old tune called “The Rose” by Bette Midler. Its more of a riff on it… starts out similar but then diverges. I haven’t found any translation of the lyrics yet but I’m plodding through the (still 2 step) translation as a side exercise in my journey into Nihongo… yeesh
Gad, I’ve only listened to the OST about 4 times today….
I agree with you, Vexx, that MT probably won’t involve any graphic scenes if any of the characters “hook up.” I’m sure that Fred-sama knows that he would lose younger fans in such an inclusion. Just doesn’t seem like the kind of thing he’d do, you know? Megatokyo has been great without it up until now.
However, I don’t think that avoiding the issue altogether in MT would be smart, and he doesn’t seem to have any intentions of it. Comepletely avoiding the issue of sex would be unrealistic and I think it would take away from the comic.
Ugh, it is so hard to type with a newly-broken wrist…. x_x
Ja ne,
Sano
fred said not to long ago, he has to get drawings done for the new calendar he coming up with…
ok, im lost. there is already two months gone and by time he gets done drawing and coloring them, there will be about another 2 months gone. its goiong to be about june or july by time it comes out.
doesnt seem like a good move to be. what do you think?
it could be next year’s calender
That is whatI was thinking, next years callender…
I think he’s doing all the work now as to make sure it’s deffinatly ready in time for 2006…
wow… it’s kinda odd typing next years date so early on into this year…
Uhh.. but this is just an assumption… for all we know he could be starting the callender mid year or something… there’s not really anything stopping him…
I know I’m undoubtably worried (rather was worried) over nothing, I do hold a really high view of Fred on this issue I just wonder how largo is going to react he’s not exactly what we would call overly subtle. Another thin it isn’t like Erika hasn’t made statements like this in the past… but it is nice to hear reasurances. I suppose. Thanks guys.
Fred-rin, I’d buy it. I don’t care if the book/site is just pictures of used toliet paper- I’d but it. Because I want to support you, anything you put your time into and the fact I’m a consumer whore.
Herro: aren’t we all? ^_^
Heck yeah, I’d buy a calendar! It’d be nice to use something other than ugly self-printed Outlook pages for a change, and there’s plenty of space on the office board for a decent calendar anyway.
[completely off-topic: did any of you see the number of people trying to d/l Air ep.9 earlier today? Insane!]
yah, i really didnt think about that. the calender could be for next year. but it was the way he put it, sound like he was trying to get it done so we could have it for this year.
hmmm… i dont no.
anyways, yah… i have seen how many people where downloading air earlier today, aound 1am. yah, i was one of them. it was about time they got the new ep. up. iv been waiting all week. i really love air. ^_^ as i can see, every one eles does to.
Yeah, I managed to get Air 9 saturday. but up until now, since I just got BitTorrent working last week, I have been downloading/watching 1 or 2 per day. But now that I am caught up, I wonder: will I survive till the next episode? Will Sano hang him self in anticipation of Air 10? Tune in next time, on “Random kid posting unrelated topics on Fred-sama’s blog comment thingy!”
-Sano
Sketchy Sae reminds me of a very special person in the morning who will now kick my ass as soon as she scans the blog and sees this posting
lovely work, Fred … quite looking forward to Warmth and what seems to be a LOT of character development.
Its funny.. I used to be all about the story and ideas but anime and manga has got me completely snarled in the character studies.
woot comic up. and a plesent suprize! Go Fred.
