[sketchbook] - kimiko
Just posted a sketch i did last night while just randomly sketching in my sketchbook. As i say in the commentary on the sketch, i don’t think i draw enough. I spend a lot of time typing in thoughts and ideas and working on things that way, but for some reason i tend to avoid sketching. I have some thoughts on why (it has to do with the fact that crappy writing is harder to see that crappy sketches when you aren’t really focusing or when you aren’t in the groove, so to speak). Anyways, i’ve decided to put the laptop down in the evenings and sit with my sketchbook instead. This drawing is one that came out last night, and oddly enough it didn’t come out that bad. I think i’ll try coloring it tomorrow.

I realleh love the idea of just sitting down with your sketch book, & just drawing away. Maybe i should try it out too.. *throws P.C. out teh window* ^^

i really, really like it.
believe me, i know what you’re talking about — before i started work on my comic, i used to plow through sketchbooks…now, i’ll be lucky if i can sit and just free draw once a week. it’s rough, but would you really rather be doing something else for a living?
March 8th, 2005 at 4:57 pm
i think you should set aside a time and force yourself to freedraw every day. it sounds like you’re not letting yourself freedraw when you’re moved to freedraw, because you’re worried about megatokyo. even though it seems to be oxymoronic to have a “forced freedraw,” i think there could be some real benefits.
just a thought. i like the kimiko sketch, but im starting to not like kimiko. i assume you intend for the readers to start to dislike kimiko.

ha, thats what i do. every night i try to get in two hours of free-drawing time before i go to bed. and then on the bus ride home and what not. either way,no one or nothing stops me from getting some ideas down on paper and play with some techniques… because if you dont force your self to have free time to draw and just play around, then how do you expected to get any better.
every little practice helps in this lifes game.
on another note, i just wanted to say thinks hiro… he knows what im talking about. ^_^

I really like that sketch of Kimiko, and I think I know why it has that “odd kind of life” that Piro-kun mentioned in the commentary. I don’t know if anyone has heard of Diego Velasquez(probably spelled wrong), but one of the things that make this Spanish artist so great is how he captures people as they would naturally be. I.E., natural poses. And something about Kimiko in this sketch seems just that: natural. Maybe it is just the pose that fits so well with the look of surprise on her face, like she was walking but turned to look at something. In any case, Piro-kun, this is one of my favorites that you have done. ^_^
I would urge anyone to image search Velasquez to see what I’m talking about.

whenever i draw all of my best drawings come out when i draw them fast.it’s wierd cause i always heart ppl sayin that their good drawings took forever
anyway i love ur comic i have vol.1 and 2

I don’t know why, but whenever I try drawing in my sketchbook, everything is screwed, but if I try to draw on a piece of notebook paper, it turns out nicer than in my sketchbook. WHAT THE CRAP!?
Maybe its something in my head. Who knows…
In anycase, your sketch is very nice. Keep it up.
*Aww man… I knew I shouldn’t have watched AIR #9 and the rest of Full Metal Alchemist… Now I’m WAAAAY behind on some projects… agh… boku wa baka desu!!!!!*

I’ve always found it much easier to think things through after a bunch of concept drawings. Just even the slightest ideas can blossom into grand plans after a couple sketches.
Perhaps you should freesketch more often. If not for the exploration part, then for filling up FredArt with more art!! ^_^

Yeah, I really like this drawing, too. It has a lot of life to it–it doesn’t feel forced or posed, which is one of the traps of trying to draw the human figure in a ‘realistic’ kind of way. You get so bogged down in the details that you forget you’re drawing people instead of a series of curves, lines, and masses. Very nice capture of a gesture. ^^b
March 9th, 2005 at 2:20 am
Yep, it’s definitely the pose and the look of surprise that does it for me.
[editor] Btw, Fred, you need more sleep/caffeine: you typoed your name in the copyright notice at the bottom of the picture.

yeah, that geos for me to. i can draw better in printer paper than sketch books.why is this?
I THINK, its because when your drawing you arm/hand hangs off the side in which case there is a big drop. and then on the other side, there is somthing eles that holds the book togather that is bocking you as well. i dont no. just my thought.

Drawing on a single sheet placed on top of one of those drafting table-sized pads tends to give me a better result but not very portable.
I’m in the doghouse for driving the family nuts playing Air OST constantly … there’s a few cuts I can’t stand (elevator music) but my favorites are (hope this isn’t too spammy) —
Track 1 (Kaisouroku)
Track 3 (Tori No Uta)
Track 4 (Natsukage !!)
Track 14 (Kotowari)
Track 17 (Kannagi)
Track 19,22 (Giniro)
and especially
Track 23 (Aozora) its like someone took the best elements of Celtic and Japanese and swirled it.
Track 26 (Farewell Song)

@vexx:
i’ve been listening to the AIR background tracks and opening tracks since mid chapter 0 of MT
(in the original PC game the 2nd CD was mostly audio tracks - you just skip over the first ‘data’ track).
Tori no Uta was always my stand in for a opening theme for my fanciful MT movie (that, and an opening gaming sequence between largo and piroko to “Descent Into Cerberon” from the quake 2 game CD
good stuff.

Funny I always pictured Megatokyo having the soundtrack to Haibane Renmei myself (but then again I love the music from that show even if I don’t care for the show)

i have a friend say that he’s working on a fan based megatokyo computer game. i dont no when it’s going to be done. hell,he may have droped it… i dont no. he has not been on the net in a while. what happend dan?

Gahhh… now I want to go get the “Haibane Renmei” OST. I forgot how beautiful the music to that series was until you mentioned that. Shoot, now how can I afford the Beck OST at the same time?
Oh, and DJ Red Jerry’s mixed for Chilled Euphoria and Deep and Chilled Euphoria are awesome. (Saw that in the 3/7 Pirotunes.) I used to listen to those when I spent Summer 2001 interning in NYC. I had the most awesome commute home– our office mandated that all employees and interns who worked second shift (4PM-Midnight) got limo rides home every night. A limo drive along FDR Drive at night listening to DJ Red Jerry is just one of the best things ever.

I don’t even know where to start to get the soundtrack to Haibane Renmei, but it’s one of those must haves^^
March 10th, 2005 at 2:21 am
Which Haibane Renmei soundtrack CD are ya’ll referring to? I found two at Amazon.
One is Haibane Renmei(Heart of Air) for $36
The other is Haibane Renmei: Hanenone for $14
I’m assuming the second one is the one being posted about but some confirmation would be nice.
March 10th, 2005 at 10:20 am
Haneone is the first and main OST - and Geneon actually has released a US version, so you can get it at that nice reasonable price. Very Very good ost.
The other one, Heart of Air is an image album with more music from the series, and has some of my faves on it. That’s still an import, but worth having.
just wish there was more

I’ve been listening to the AIR OST off and on since I started finding promo videos for the TV series and movie. Mostly Tori no Uta and Farewell Song, since they’re the OP/ED themes. I’ve got a long drive (4 hours, give or take) back home from school tomorrow; maybe I’ll pop it in the ol’ CD player again.
Somewhat unrelated: I just ordered myself one of them 20GB iPods. Now to get all my anime music sorted and tagged…

I haven’t listened to any of the OSTs mentioned, but it is something I will be sure to check out. Has anyone ever listened to the FLCL OST? I only have the first one, but it’s great.

Well now I feel left out, I don’t listen to any of those OSTs, I don’t even know what OST stands for! But I like the sketch of kimiko, it got me to draw for around two hours, (too bad it was all Tales of Symphonia fan art).
And on an unrelated note, can I have permission to work on a megatokyo flash animation, fred? I’ll probobly use the same scrpit and angles as the comic. It’ll be around 2 or 3 or 4 movies per chapter. I just wanted to know If I could use the comic as my main guide. Thanks in advance if you reply.

I was referring to any of them. I actually really like the background music for inside the series itself. Oi I guess I’m just going to have to find it on import

OST- Original SoundTrack.
The first FLCL OST CD is great. The second one is pretty good as well, but it’s kind of a mix of ‘drama’ tracks of the VAs performing skits (in Japanese with no translation), as well as additional music tracks. But the tunes on there are awesome nonetheless. Both volumes have been released in the US, so you can get them online for about $15 a piece. So yeah, it’s volume 2, so it won’t have as much of the good stuff as volume 1, but it’s still pretty good.
Other series’ OSTs may have to be imported, but if you’re patient, the more popular series are also run in the US. And the import stuff is *hideously* expensive. The Japanese record companies sure know how to gouge every last penny out of a fan. So yeah, do your research first. This is an area where impulse buys can really cost you.
If you like the FLCL OST, you should definitely check out Beck. It’s still airing in Japan, and nobody in the US has picked up the license yet, although I hope someone does eventually. There’s a lot of music by some of Japan’s best indie bands in it. Definitely worth a look and a listen.

I really like that sketch of Kimiko. She Looks quite mature in it or something, can’t put my finger on it but I know what I hate and I don’t hate that!
Took your adv. on getting AIR OST and ordered it from one of your links (Himeya (sp?)) in a previous post. $49 all in to Dublin. Arrived quick too. Is the Kanon OST any good?
Unrelated but just found out so I have to say… Haibane Renmei - Vol. 1 Region 2 DVD has a release date of 18/04/2005 ! Woohoo! Finally becoming available in the UK & ROI !!
Keep up the good work as always Fred!
