spanner rotation
Well, this is kinda odd. I haven’t received a single complaint, bitch or whine about the serious omake sequence so far. It’s either two things… lots of people have just gone away until i’m done with the Omake, or most of the people who keep wanting things to go back to chapter 0 style wackiness have finally given up. Or, maybe people like it so far, i dunno. Or maybe i should just stop worrying about it. Yeah, i should try that.
One thing that Omakes (an omake, btw, is japanese for ‘extra’ and is usually a small, short, funny piece that they do at the end of shows or the end of manga chapters - usually funny, but not always) and gaps between chapters do is give you room to make bigger adjustments in your creative attitude than you can mid-comic. I didn’t have much room for that with the last chapter because i really needed to jump right into chapter 6 - there was no room for dallying - but this chapter has given me some room and i’m attempting to use it. So far so good, i think… if nothing else, i find myself being more expressive with the art than i sometimes am.
I’ve been trying to make some adjustments to the way i work, the way i create, and plans for the future. Increasing output is not something that you just make happen by brute force. There needs to be some kind of intimate understanding about how you create in order to understand how to better that process. This is something i’ll probably always struggle with, but i think that i’m starting to have a little more confidence that most of my stronger ideas won’t result in a hail of tomatoes from the MT readership. If i were ever to do anything that incited that kind of reaction from readers, i’m sure that really i’d be the first one to throw one.

So far I like the omake you’re doing now. It seems pretty good so far, considering we’ve only gotten to three pages of it so far.
I’m also not too disappointed about the lack of funny and how the manga has changed from Chapter 0 till now. There’s still that bit of funny that was there all along, it just seems in smaller quanity in the past chapter or so, but it’s only because there’s been a lot of drama in the plot line lately.
I also think the omake is a nice refreshment from the normal pace of the story. Let’s you start fresh when you continue with the new chapter. ^_^
July 11th, 2005 at 11:15 am
Ahaha, personally, I love it so far. I got excited when I saw that first picture of Kimiko with the wings ;D (HAIBANE RENMEI WHAT? >_>;;) Omake is always fun because you get to see your favorite characters in a different story and stuff…_> *THEN* I will throw tomatoes, but otherwise I think you don’t have to worry (about me, at least). _> DRAW MORE PICTURES I LOVE YOUR STYLE >_>;;;;)
July 11th, 2005 at 11:27 am
Fred, you shouldn’t worry so much about flexing your creative muscle. People who prefer dead humor are just often louder than those of a more intellectual strain.
July 11th, 2005 at 11:27 am
I’ve got no complaints with it so far - I’m along for the journey, wherever it leads.
And so far it’s heading in a great direction.
July 11th, 2005 at 11:37 am
it seems pretty good so far.
July 11th, 2005 at 11:50 am
I’m actually really enjoying this Omake. It’s a nice break from all the humor in MT, and I like how the MT characters in the Omake fall so fluidly into place. It’s nice to see a more serious story-line come outta you, because you do them so well. <3
July 11th, 2005 at 11:59 am
I don tknow why you get so worked up over complaints. I mean that are ass-holes in the world, and You jstu have to realize for every complaint you get there are 100 maybe 200 people who are readign your work, and loving it (and just happen to be to lazy to write you)!!!
Also, I love how while yes the main focus of the story has drifted since chapter 0 , So has the Art, its so much more complex, and mature, and I think you’ve gotten displaying emotions in 2-D down to an art.
July 11th, 2005 at 12:21 pm
The “Intarwebbery” is like the opposite of the business model that says “for every customer that complains there are 10 that just walk away. Here… the maxim is that for every 100 people that like or depend on something, there’s 4 or 5 hairless monkeys at the waterhole throwing poop in it.
You know, the ones that missed the monolith meeting.
I’ve posted to this effect, but I’m very curious as to how you’re going to pull off an effective short story with five pages left to go — should be interesting. The opener sequence could power a three month storyline, imo.
Now of course, I have to finish watching Haibane (I’ve only seen the first couple of eps… Mahoraba, Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, and Honey&Clover keep distracting me… oops, there’s another ep).
Oh, and thanks to your little comic, I’ve acquired an interesting new correspondent: Pixiebell (via IRC). Very nice lady (who happens to be the same dimensions as my wife Sundrop so “where to find stuff that fits” is a hot topic).
July 11th, 2005 at 12:24 pm
I like the omake so far. =)
I actually love how you have been making the manga a little more serious, is one of the reasons I read it.
July 11th, 2005 at 12:26 pm
I’ve never had much of a complaint with how you do things, since the art on DPD makes up for a lot of it.
You do what you can - don’t let some insensitive jerks harass you and bring you down. Afterall, you’re not making anyone read Megatokyo, nor are you making them pay. They haven’t got the right to treat you like that, so ignore them, ban them, whatever.
There are people who appreciate your hard work.
Concentrate on them.
P.S. Your new Omake seems to have some elements of ‘Hainbane Renmei’, don’t you think? ^__^
July 11th, 2005 at 12:33 pm
fred, i just wanted to say that i think you did an awesome job with Ch6, and that im thinking this omake is going to be quite good (i’m a sucker for wings). and don’t worry about people complaining that MT is becoming too serious. personally, i like it. i mean, an anime or manga doesnt have to be hilarious or gory to be good. take Air or KgNE for example; both serious animes, and both are rather good. anyways, keep up the awesome work, and good luck with Ch7!
July 11th, 2005 at 12:46 pm
Try not to worry ’bout the complaints from some numb and stiff idiots who are just too straight-minded and cannot even catch on the sentence “relax, we understand j00″. Keep the faith cuz as you see there are people for whom your work is thrillin’.
I’ve got no complaints none whatsoever

Best wishes from Poland
July 11th, 2005 at 1:07 pm
Now, what exactly happened that makes you so concerned about complaints?
“A lot of people emailed me wondering what the joke was in the previous comic. It was very frustrating.
I was trying to break out of the mold that webcomics had to be like newspaper comics - something funny, everyday.
Some people were unwilling to accept that, and even threatened to stop reading if I pulled something like that again.
My response was simple - fine, don’t read it. No one is forcing you”
Megatokyo Vol 1 (Dark Horse ed.) Page 65
Now why don’t you just try that again against those pathetic whiny bas****s?
Personally, I like deeper storylines and comics that aren’t afraid to try something new. So keep it up and be assured that there are many fans out there that support your comic-wise decisions, whether there are whiny basta**s or not.
July 11th, 2005 at 1:41 pm
Sorry I don’t visit the MT forums, and that this is the only place I however infrequently give you any feedback.
In tune with some of the other comments, I’ve only got so much personal bandwidth, and I unfortunately us little of it to praise and ecourage (luckily, I use even less of it to criticize; since, as I’ve stated here before, my powers of criticizm can really only be stopped by lead or kryptonite or certain rare forms of unobtanium).
Anyway, I like having regular content updates, but as it is, generally, I can do with a rant or a fredblog or a DPD.
I generally prefer the DPD to all other stopgap material since they tend to be different than the main comic. Kinda of a more for less sort of situation where you get more ideas out of fewer drawings (though often the one drawing is obviously more work intensive than say one frame of a normal comic).
This omake, though is like a DPD, intensified, and before you ask, that’s a good thing . . . great thing, actually. I much prefer this to any other omake you’ve done so far and am anxiously awaiting the rest of it (always having to remind myself, “due time, due time”).
Please feel free to digress like this when you feel the need. It cause some of my favorite stuff to be created. I could easily see shorts plugging MT characters into all sorts of alternate anime/manga/fred-created worlds, maybe as an ongoing side project at that point where MT concludes and you switch over to Warmth ;-p
If nothing else, disregard my rambling and please stay this course. I’m loving it.

This Omake is a splendid change of pace. Different, yes, but Haibane Renmei was what I consider a classic, wholesome Anime. Keeping true to megatokyo roots and integrating the artwork makes for a balanced Omake, which is refreshing.
Humour doesn’t necessarily need to be used, as it is only one colour to paint a larger picture. Drama, suspense, love and other emotions all come together to work away at the easel.
Anywho,…yada yada yada.
Keep up the good work Fred!

So far it looks cool! Not everything you do has to be funny…
I think if Megatokyo was either entirely wacky or entirely serious, I wouldn’t be as interested in it as I am. In fact, I love the shifting viewpoint, the idea that Piro and Largo essentially live in very different worlds…
(And of course it helps that I love your art)
All I can say about the falling spanner is: OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!
July 11th, 2005 at 3:49 pm
Don’t worry so much. You are a great artist and a very good comic write, the wide varity of emotions is what sets you a step above the writers whom know only humor.
Keep up the great work.
July 11th, 2005 at 3:51 pm
I have no clue if your going to read this bud, but the fourth frame in the most recent segment, with the kimiko angel on the ground really hit me. It may not seem special to anyone else but like the broken miho poster I have, I think somthing themed around that frame would be wonderful; I can feel alot of emotion from that frame. Anywho, I hope you read this.
July 11th, 2005 at 3:55 pm
Just a quick note of encouragement,
Don’t let the nay-sayers get ya down, Mr. Gallagher…
Your brilliant webcomic has been quite an inspiration to me, artistically and otherwise, and your continued dedication to it — in spite of bakabakashii “fans” — is admirable.
I’ll continue to support your webcomic, both with my visits, word-of-mouth, and money (I’ve got all three print versions, and be sure I’ll get any new ones).
Take my word for it — true fans, the ones worth listening too — are interested in your story… wherever that might take us.
Thanks for sharing your vision, art, and talent, and freely at that.
By the way… the omake has me hooked. Awesome!
Keep up the great work!
July 11th, 2005 at 4:01 pm
Fred, I really like the omake so far. Nice work, different from MT. You show depth in your work so easily. Keep going. This will be good.
July 11th, 2005 at 4:13 pm
A Haibane Renmei omake maybe? I love it so far! Keep up the great work!
July 11th, 2005 at 4:17 pm
Glancing back at my comment from this morning (the second one), I see it exploded halfway and left some of it out >_>;; It should have mentioned throwing tomatoes only if you stop the omake >_> and then, also, something about updating fredart more (I can’t remember.) sorry for the mix-up. OK! hurry up with that next comic. (I think it killed my text where I had all the less than three hearts. >_<;;)
July 11th, 2005 at 5:28 pm
I’m digging the Omake.
July 11th, 2005 at 6:59 pm
There is really one way I can truely express my opinion with this comic, and all of the comics you’ve ever done…
::Worships::
July 11th, 2005 at 7:48 pm
interesting so far, and very nice artwork
July 11th, 2005 at 8:30 pm
My sister and I adore all your stuff. In three days we read through all the comics you have up! Yeah…we have no life. >.<
Anyway, so far I like your Omake, and I look forward to reading the rest of it, as well as any and all future installments of MegaTokyo. It’s great stuff.
Piro always makes me want to give him a hug, and Largo reminds me of my sister…wacky and all l33t and stuff. XD
Anyway, just wanted to say great job and keep at it! You’re an awesome artist, and I love your work.
July 11th, 2005 at 8:37 pm
For me, I think my creative process is always evolving. I find it really positive to try things from different angles. It’s really helped me create things I never would have previously.
July 11th, 2005 at 8:46 pm
The omake’s been…interesting to say the least. I do admit that I miss some of the humour, not from Chapter 0 but from Chapter 2 in particular, but at the same time I think that MT may have benefited from your desire to make something different, and ‘Circuitry’ is another example of this, and I’d like to see where it goes.
Chapter 6, while a bit of an effort to get through, was quite, quite briliant and I just hope that Chapter 7 carries on this trend, although it’d be nice to have it a little more light-hearted (in places, at least) after what I’d thought was a bit of a turning point in the comic. As so many a fanperson has said before, your artwork is superb; keep it up! =D

July 11th, 2005 at 8:53 pm
I’m really intrigued by Piro’s new look. I almost miss the glasses, but without them he looks more edgy and that’s what I think you were trying for, right? I’m hoping for more explanation later… Your works still impresses me everytime.
July 11th, 2005 at 9:39 pm
actually, the roll into chapter 7 should, uhm, be an nice counterpoint to the seriousness of the omake - at least as i have it planned now. Thats part of why i felt i could do something serious for the omake.
Life is about contrasts. without them things get boring.
July 11th, 2005 at 10:28 pm
I think the omake is fine — a pastiche of Haibane Renmei is perfectly appropriate. If I might make a suggestion, I encourage you to have the characters act in noble, tender and heroic ways, to live up to the legacy of that great show. Never give up! And thanks!
July 11th, 2005 at 11:39 pm
Dear Fred,
In terms of having stuff planned out and ready to go, i dont think you should worry about it. For instance, im the same way and things are working out great. I write essays, and ive found that for me i write worse when i have thhis strict framework, because itslike putting my mind in a cage, if you just pick a thesis and start writing things tend to flow better. And look at it this way youve been goig for almost 800 comics now, and hell youre still going. YOu rock man, and so does your creative process. dont let anyone tell you different.

Personally, I like the Omake as it’s going so far. Even if I didn’t, it wouldn’t mean I’d send hatemail, or make bad comments in the forums. I read and enjoy megatokyo not only for the story, but for the art and feeling behind it.
I’m also not in the mindset that if I don’t like one comic/omake/chapter, I won’t like the rest. (I’m sure there are many times many fans who also think this way.) I’ll always give it a chance, it hasn’t gone wrong on me yet.
Keep going strong Fred, you’ll always have fans, no matter what some may say.
July 12th, 2005 at 1:35 am
I like it ^^
Reminds me of Haibane Renmei a tad bit.
July 12th, 2005 at 2:07 am
i like it keep going and dont let them get you down your doing grate ^_^ so just keep it up and do as you feel that is good
July 12th, 2005 at 2:33 am
I’m enjoying the omake so far. I just think it’s interesting to see the characters in a different universe and in a different story. That and I’m really digging the artwork in these last three strips. Awsome stuff.
Can’t wait to see where you’re going with the story either. ^_^
July 12th, 2005 at 3:00 am
Love it! Want more!
July 12th, 2005 at 3:45 am
This is going to be a dark omake. I do hope you are a bit optimistic than the clone manga guy. His stories are a bit scarry. Still, I ask that you be true to the story as you always have and not cater to the masses, which you haven’t.
The reason that I read your comics is primarily for the drama. That is why I started reading Megatokyo way back when. Also your site’s art and story tug at the heartstrings and for that I thank you.
July 12th, 2005 at 8:00 am
I’m enjoying the omake so far, the artwork is gorgeous…and I love Kimiko’s wings.
July 12th, 2005 at 10:14 am
I started reading MT around the Great Teacher Largo part and the development of the story has been fantastic. Don’t get upset over f**kheads with nothing better to do than to trash one of the best webcomics out there. There are hundreds or thousands more who love your comic and would be very sad to see it fade away.
July 12th, 2005 at 12:02 pm
I LOVE the omake! It’s soooo pretty! ^_^ Kimiko is the chick with the wings right? I know it’s based off Haibane Renmei, but I’ve never seen the series. ^^;; Actually, the first I heard of it was from your rants. ^^ I love the omake so much. I’m glad you did a serious one instead of a humor one. I personally don’t think I would’ve like it as much. ^_^
Keep up the good work! ^-^
July 12th, 2005 at 12:48 pm
I really like the omake so far. I think the camera angles add a lot to it.
I saw it and right away it just seems slightly…sad and wistful…or that could just be me. ^_^;
July 12th, 2005 at 1:05 pm
I’d love to read a blogpost about the differences in production that you find you are changing.
p.s. I’m enjoying the omake. Keep it up!
July 12th, 2005 at 1:44 pm
okay - i like everything you’ve done. Megatokyo is awesome i like the omake’s (that the correct plural?) including the new one - just don’t give in to the dark side and unlease any more shirt guy dom’s please!!!!
keep up the good work!
July 12th, 2005 at 4:47 pm
I’m liking where megatokyo is and has been going lately. It’s not my favourite webcomic, but strangely i find myself looking forward to the next strip most out of any of the others. Keep it up!
July 12th, 2005 at 5:08 pm
I do, like the majority of the previous commenters, like your omake, plus I learned a new word ^^
I guess it’s kinda same feeling as in fanfics, like ‘hm, this looks strange, it isn’t THE [title os something], but certainly has something to do with it… Let me check this out’. Nevermind my babbling.
Anyway,keep up the good work.
July 12th, 2005 at 6:07 pm
You shouldn’t have to be obsessed with what the readers want, as long as there is stuff to complain about people will. Just make sure you continue the series, i might die of shock if you don’t!!! I happen to like the Omake thing, it’s a nice summer break, gives me time to get hooked again during school, need something to look forward to then.
July 12th, 2005 at 6:39 pm
Hey, just wanted to say that you’re doing a bang up job of all this. The Omake is very intriguing, and I don’t feel the need for your story to be funny all the time. Yours is the only webcomic I’ve stuck with in the long run because you allow it to change and grow and develop from where it started. Others (at least to me) have gotten very stale and old, but not megatokyo.
Eagerly awaiting the next omake installment…
Nat
PS: I love the look she’s got on her face when she’s on the ground…it was like looking into her eyes and seeing exactly what she was feeling…Totally amazing. I wish I could draw half as well as you.
July 12th, 2005 at 8:11 pm
I’m loving the Omake there Fred. Then again I like serious stuff so this is a definate plus in my book. Keep up the good work man.
July 13th, 2005 at 1:02 am
Dude Piro looks like he could kick some serious ass in the Omake!
I think you’re doing a wonderful job so far. There’s a lot more to story telling than just jokes and pointless banter and you’ve more than proven that just through a few panels. *applaudes*
July 13th, 2005 at 1:30 am
I think those that were sitting around waiting for Largo to go splat from another hit and run city bus have finally fled from the premesis or are simply lurking in the shadows. But for your sake, hopefully the first. So yes, please do try to not worry so much about it. ^o^
While I do love the bizarre, wacky, twists, turns and drama of Megatokyo (it’s what keeps me reading), this Omake is simply splendid. >3 Already it’s my fave one you’ve done thus far. It’s good to take a hiatus of the constant need to have something humerous. Because as you’ve said, life isn’t always funny. It’s a unique (and quite pleasant) turn to see the utter seriousness Largo takes everything in his “the evil is approaching, one needs to prepare” ways actually become logical.
The scenary has a good feel and the omake’s story has blown in with a feirce intensity that just sets the mood for a good read.
Yes, evaluating the way one creates is no doubt a good thing. But try not to over analyze. You’ll become like me and have anxiety attacks. –.–;;
Good luck with the rest of the Omake and preparations for the next chapter!
July 13th, 2005 at 3:07 am
I’m another one who is enjoying the Omake.
I started reading Megatokyo in the first place because of the artistic style. I’ve always admired how it looked, especially when it was (at the time) an amateur webcomic. The sweet and funny story drew me in (I’m a big Largo fan!).
I enjoy serious manga, though. I read other shoujo, and not all of it is comedic. Sometimes, it’s nice to have a change, even in the same comic; life isn’t always incredibly wacky or serious. The fact that you’re experimenting at all is fantastic.
July 13th, 2005 at 5:34 am
Sooo THATS what an Omake is!!! Thanks for the definition. You kept saying Omake this, and omake that, an I’m sitting here going “WHAT THE HELL IS AN OMAKE?!?”. I wasn’t sure what it was, but it seemed intersting.
Fred, I do really like the Omake so far. True, I did enjoy chapter 0, but I enjoy all of Megatokyo. Just as long as you throw a definition or explanation every once in awhile so I can keep up. Besides, all artists travel in writing style, creativity, story, and inspiration. Any viewer with a clue should know that. Change is the part of the game. So take their complaining in stride.
July 13th, 2005 at 6:16 am
So far so Good Piro. I like seeing things get a little heavy now and then… Look at Neon Genesis… starts out funny and jsut gets progressively more serious and it still kicks ass…
as far as the whiners go… just remember… it takes 36 muscles to frown… but only 4 to extend your right arm and bitch slap the bloody wanker…
July 13th, 2005 at 7:47 am
Well, I’m enjoying both the recent Omake, and Megatokyo in general. My only complaint is that you take your time moving the story and I find myself wanting to scream, “GET ON WITH IT , MAN!”
But no worries. For every idiot who thinks it’s fun to slag you for what is, in essence, a project made for *your own* enjoyment, there are at least a hundred who are just glad to be able to experience it at all.
(Even if it *is* slow)
July 13th, 2005 at 9:13 am
Hey, I think the omake is awesome so far! XD Good art and all that detail makes me wanna cry cause I couldn’t pull it all off. o_o Can’t wait to see the next page, and there’s nothing wrong with a funny comic with angst in it. *glares at people who doesn’t think so* Go Ulexes!
July 13th, 2005 at 10:07 am
Wow, I didn’t know I could make comments like this! haha. But Fred, I really enjoy the Omake you’re doing now. The art is beautiful, and you know how to put just enough suspence at the end of each frame to keep the readers wanting more. The smallest dialogue of “Where is the other one?” that Largo says makes me wonder, “Is Erika going to be an angel too? What about Miho?!” Ha, I’ll be looking forward to finding out. ^_^ Also, I hope I see you at Otakon this year. Two years ago I went to the line way too late and thousands of people wanted your autograph. T_T This year I’ll get there early! Well, keep up the good work.
Ja ne!
~Shannon
July 13th, 2005 at 1:54 pm
I’d like to add my vote of confidence to the chorus of voices here. It’s a good start. Interesting opinion from Mr. Largo Hair: “She’s cursed”.
Indeed? Whatever you do, don’t stop!
July 13th, 2005 at 1:59 pm
I’m guessing the silence is from people simply being content with the Omake. From what I’ve beheld of it so far, it seens engaugeing, and a refreshing break from the megatokyo storyline. (I’ve noticed a lack of stick guy dom and Piro dead days.I appriciate that. ) Please do continue, I’m interested on seeing the story turn out.
July 13th, 2005 at 4:45 pm
there’s only one concern i have, and this goes back to episode 716 ’safe’ where kimiko speaks to largo in japanese and we’re seeing it from largo’s viewpoint, so obviously there’s no translation. what does she say there?
as far as the omake goes? i like it! writing a story then drawing it out must take time i’m sure! and like i said in another post, i’ve enjoyed every bit of it.
July 13th, 2005 at 5:15 pm
if any one complains about your comic tell them thay can damn well not read it! personaly i think your wonderful i came in to reading it about a year ago and sat down for hours reading the archive so i could catch up…*S* its charming and funny and i love the little side stories… anyone who donsn’t should shut up and not read it….and i am also glad to hear the baby and your sister are doing better..*S*
July 13th, 2005 at 5:41 pm
I didn’t even notice that it was Kimiko…I just saw the wings and thought of Seraphim/Haibane Renmei. ^_^
July 14th, 2005 at 12:15 am
People always bitch about what they don’t get. For the rest of us, keep doing what you do best.
Otherwise I’ll just hire some gorillas to thump some disgruntled fans.
July 14th, 2005 at 4:26 am
I’m enjoying the Omake so far.. Haha.. Oh, and I don’t throw tomatoes.. I throw potatoes. Much harder. Just kidding. ..Maybe.
I enjoy the omake, mainly because it’s good to have a little break from the main MT storyline, and have the occasional extra little thing.. I say, keep it up.
July 14th, 2005 at 7:59 am
A number of you are asking questions that have been answered over at Megatokyo.com’s subforum called “Story Discussions”
What is an omake?
What was it that Kimiko said in Japanese in 716?
What is the velocity of an unladen spanner wrench as it strikes omake-Kimiko?
http://forums.megatokyo.com and follow the Story Discussions link.
Story Discussions is a good place and most of the people behave relatively well… Fred is the mod of that subforum with lots of unheralded assistance from Omoikane. There is a pretty good Search feature that will find posts on the subject you have a question about if you don’t see it on the front page. Please read the Sticky guidelines. Oh, and don’t visit the other subforums at the site to talk about Megatokyo — they pertain to different subject matter and those folks will tell you so noisily
Some of those forums may be interesting to you for other reasons.
July 14th, 2005 at 8:08 am
Long time fan, first time poster.
The omake, I believe is quite good and interesting. It has almost a depressing flare to it. I think that that’s the reason I like it so much.
As for fans that don’t like when artists/writers do other projects other than their popular story. Excuse my language but… piss on them.
Being somewhat of a writer/artist myself, (Mainly fanfiction at the moment.) I get some emails from readers who are upset I don’t continue with a story or I take too long to update.
Fans do not seem to realize that we’re not machines doing this 24/7. I use to be one of these fans too until I tried my hand at writing. It’s not easy sometimes. Anyways… all in all, I believe that it’s good to expand in your writing and art.
I do hope that you do a bit for ‘Warmth’. I like that it’s in one of my favourite cities in the world. Sendai is truely a beautiful place. I plan to go there. Also, the idea sounds interesting.
Well, Happy Travelings.

What?!? Fred, don’t leave us hanging like that!!! *enjoys suspense anyways :)* Go Largo =)
July 14th, 2005 at 12:30 pm
Hell’s getting pretty cold, I guess.
In all seriousness, better just enjoy the light for a while and keep using your omake time as a kind of relaxation from the strain you get during normal chapters.
Hooray for some respect. It’s well deserved.

Would it be entirely too nitpicky to mention that the wrench in the comic is an open end wrench, not a spanner?
Guess it would be, yes…
But I won’t be saying this has a negative effect on the comic at all. The comic is great, and I’m really looking forward to the rest of this omake! It looks very interesting so far.

Whee! Give me big love for getting internet access again! After a 9 hour trip from the UK to Washington Dulles Airport, 2 days of 11 hour shifts (which has completely screwed my internal clock btw), I am finally able to see the latest strip!! Just like to tell you Piro that it was worth the wait… have a feeling I’m going to enjoy this Omake.
Now if I could just find an anime shop and somewhere to buy little badges (the sort you put on bags n such) in Washington DC this weekend I can go back to the UK happy!
July 14th, 2005 at 7:21 pm
Hey Piro, don’t know if you’ll see this amongst all of the other responses, but personally, I really like the new direction you’ve taken with the omake. Don’t get me wrong; I love the MT style, but I really like the kind of “alternate reality” direction this one has gone in. Screw anyone who whines about it - they aren’t forced to look at it, and you’re giving them something for free that most of us would pay for in a heartbeat. Try not to be so fried about it - just let things go where they will, and something great will come of it. True MT fans would agree.
July 14th, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Although not as exctatic as some other readers, I am interested in the way this omake is going. (This is probably because I haven’t read/seen Haibane Renmei. I know, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.) I think I will enjoy the omake, though, as much as I’ve enjoyed the rest of your work. You inspire me and many others to do their best, so don’t be so hard on yourself. (Although I’m probably a hypocrit for saying that, sorry)
July 14th, 2005 at 11:34 pm
i like the omake sequence. it’s really cool to se piro and largo’s personalities come out in yet another setting.
July 14th, 2005 at 11:38 pm
Yo! First time commenting here- but I’ve been reading MT for about a year now. I just wanted to say I’m looking forward to seeing what you’re going to do with the omake- whichever direction you pick to go in with it, I’ll be happy to read- but go with what _you_ think is best.
I’ve found that a key in my work. I also hope you do the FMP omake someday, that would be cool! (Or a Naruto omake >dies a pathetically un l33t death, stabbed by people shouting ‘Narutard!’<) Btw, I caved and bought the Megatokyo library poster- it’s going hang right over my desk in the fall!
July 15th, 2005 at 2:02 am
this omake is brilliant - normally i check the megatokyo site every 6 or so hours, JUST in case - thats been stepped up for this storyline - its FACINATING - keep up the good work!
July 15th, 2005 at 2:10 am
i like it a lot.
*adding my random props to the huge pile you have building up*
hope my comment actully means something, hope it doesn’t just blend in with the others and disaper…
but then again…all i really said was “props”
July 15th, 2005 at 2:22 am
Piro seems more…o.O Mature…
like he stepped out of his stereotypical “Otaku” scene, and he grew an attitude o.o;; It’s kinda nice seeing that…
Largo still keeps his kinda paranoid-ish personality, but he seems to have more control over situations and himself…
I guess the no booze, no anime/manga thing made the characters grow a bit ^^;;
July 15th, 2005 at 2:31 am
FRED, (offtopic)
Just finished reading volume 9 of the manga Mahoraba: Heartful Days.
Simultaneously a happy story arc and a tearjerker…. you have been warned (you’ll love it). Good stuff to roll in while thinking about your work…
July 15th, 2005 at 11:51 am
Well, I found Mega Tokyo because a friend sent me the link, and it took me a bit more than a few hours to finish it the day I started (-_- so tired….must sleep) but I read it all about a week and a half ago.
How could people -not- like the story line? That’s my question for you. Ya have a good comic going there, and believe me, I’ve read alot of the webcomics out there. This by far is the best I’ve ever come across.
And not that my opinion matters, as this probably won’t get noticed, but the omake is good, it’s nice to have a pause in the main story line, and start another *no sarcasm* I do that with books alot, and I’m sure most people who read Mega Tokyo enjoy this pause too. We know it gives ya time to edit up on the main story line, make it better, go into more detail, that sort of thing.
So with that said,
Keep up the good job,
Kyra (first time poster here.)
July 15th, 2005 at 2:24 pm
Yeah, what Vexx said about Mahoraba Manga 9 is very sad… kamo…
Hey, and give us a visit once in a while in Zirc #mt-talk. It’s a place you can kick back with us and talk anime.

This is the best Omake yet. It simply owns. If this was it’s own comic, I would totally read it daily.
Very good.
July 16th, 2005 at 11:07 am
(My, my, gathering quite the amount of fans here, aren’t we?)
I just hope that the readers have come to accept the serious stuff with the funny stuff. Perhaps that’s happened? I like the way you’ve drawn the omake. It makes the comic seem more complete. And the seriousness is quite welcome, to me. It’s a little refreshing to see them handling something serious without slapstick humor or loads of angst thrown in (:P).
Keep up the good work.
July 16th, 2005 at 11:13 am
Actually, to make one more comment, (sorry, something new came to mind…) most anime and manga start out funny but get serious in the middle and end. Humor to bring the reader in, good plot to keep them there. I wish other readers would realize this, that might shut them up for a little while. I don’t think they have much reason to complain about things getting too serious, then.
July 16th, 2005 at 11:25 am
So far this omake looks great! I don’t mind the seriousness of it and it seems to have a great story. I’m a big fan of Largo (and where you’ve taken him) and it’s good to see him take a leadership role outside his bizarre world in MT proper.
I do love the funny, however, and look forward to more MT wackiness in the future. Here’s hopin’ Largo (and Piro
get the girl.
BTW, I dig the FMP sketch and would love to see a spin-off. Keep up the good work!
July 16th, 2005 at 3:03 pm
The omake is going great so far, Piro! Don’t worry about a thing. It is your comic, and you shouldn’t have to bend your creativity to other people’s will. You’ll always have at least one reader. *waves* I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates all the work you’ve put into your webcomic. Keep on goin’ with it cause you’re doin’ just fine! ^-^
July 16th, 2005 at 9:22 pm
Really. Do what you want to do with it. Others opinions shouldn’t effect your creativeness. But the change is amazing to just get more ideas to where you want to go. you can only go so far with comedy in every strip. Keep up the good work.
July 17th, 2005 at 2:40 am
Fred don’t let anyone get you down. I’m sure that alot of people agree with me on the fact that for every singel whiner out there, there’s another one or two hundred people really enjoying your work. It just happens that people who are upset tend cause more of a ruckus than people who are content. I’ve been reading MT since the begining and it is true that since chapter 0 or so the plot has become a bit more… ploty. Actually… the beginning of chapter 1 is like where the plot finally starts. Some people are only attracted to MT because of the humor caused by Largo and Piro’s conflicting characters, while others (*ahem* like me) are attracted to MT more because it has a good story and a good plot.
Either way, Fred just know one thing… do what feels right. If a few people complain it’s no reason to change who YOU are, OR how you do MT… THEY need to change, not you… Besides… if MT changed… it wouldn’t be the MT that we love anymore now would it?
Keep up the good work Fred, I’m on my third trip through all three books, and I still bust a gut over Largo, and I still have to make sure not to get too emotional when Piro ruins things with Kimiko. In short: keep it up, you’ve got a silent battalion of contented fans backing you up.
July 17th, 2005 at 5:36 am
you’ve gotten complaints?!?!
:: breaks out the plasma cannon ::
where??
I love the omake, its pretty cool so far, and its weird, cause I have alot of those windfarms like half a block from here… lol lol. durn oklahoma.
Your art has improved TREMENDOUSLY since comic 1, and the story is getting somewhat serious, which is awesome.
Keep it up, cause if you quit, I’ll make sure to borrow eve from hawk, and let her have a talk with you :-D.
July 17th, 2005 at 7:37 am
Hi I love megatokyo. I think it about the coolest thing since sliced bread and I can never see why people complain. I’m just a wannabe artist so I can grasp just how long it takes to take an idea from concept to complete product (and procrastinating dosen’t help. I also like the new more seriouse megatokyo it started off kind of manic and crazy but it kind of just settled into what we see today a very good story filled with action and adventure. Art evolves and changes with it’s creator so as you change your art does keep it up I for one love your work.
July 17th, 2005 at 8:00 am
You rule man. Don’t let anyone get you down.
July 17th, 2005 at 11:29 am
Duh, dumbass, nobody’s going to compain about the omake because, so far, it rocks out loud.
Angles, futuristic-y flavor, and Largo with some other expression besides ‘crazy psycho l33t guy’ on his face.
As an Evil Chibi Fangirl, I approve.
July 17th, 2005 at 5:53 pm
Looking great so far. Can’t wait to see more of this omake.( Woo woo for expanding vocabulary! ) The art is great as always. Let the story tell its tale and don’t fret too much over a few squeeky wheels.
July 17th, 2005 at 10:29 pm
I love it!
You are now the ONLY ONLINE COMIC I look forward to!!
I mean it!
Mean there are others that I read…
But none that I CAN’T WAIT TO READ!
Keep up the Great work! ^_^
July 17th, 2005 at 11:40 pm
^^ You shouldn’t worry about the omake you’re working on Fred. In my opinion, it sounds really good so far. And the plotline really did remind me of Haibane (from what little I’ve seen of it). And I know I’m being repetitive from what ther other 1938409834 comments have already said, Megatokyo is still really good despite the fact that it’s not like chapter 0 anymore, you still put in a joke or two. In fact, this omake you’re working on right now looks more detailed than what you usually do. Maybe it’s just the shadowing.
`~` Wow, that’s pretty much the most constructive thing I’ve come up with all summer. =_= I know I can do better, but I have a headache.
Anyways I’m getting off topic. Make sure you keep up the great work! ~^.^~ I’ll always be one to support your work.
July 18th, 2005 at 1:13 am
You know I’ve always liked MT. I think that the turn away from the goofy chapter0 style is perfectly fine. As long as you continue to create what you desire and express what lies in your heart with the same passion as you have thus far you will have a strong reader base. Being true to yourself is the most important thing I think.
July 18th, 2005 at 7:22 am
Yes, we like the omake. You don’t have to worry so much about what other people like–if you like it, then it’s good enough for everyone else. Everyone’s favorite dad, Bill Cosby, once said: “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” Stephen King: “When asked, ‘How do you write?’ I invariably answer, ‘one word at a time.’” King as well: “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” One last King, but this is paraphrased:
One should write in a place of their own. The most important feature of this place: a door that you can and are willing to shut. No TV, no phone and no video games. Curtains closed. Write first with the door closed. Write for yourself without worry about theme, symbolism or accuracy of details. Those are for the second draft, which is usually written with the door open, after he has sent the book to a select group of critical readers.
Although, I do miss the humorous ones–when I find them. I set them as my wallpaper, and in conjunction with Webshots, I get to read a little comedy every day.
Basically, word hard without care of what others may think, if only at first. Work hard, and move ahead when you want to. While it pains me to say that I wasn’t here at the start, I can bet you didn’t begin Megatokyo with pleasing everyone in mind.
But you’re doing it anyway. Great job.
July 18th, 2005 at 9:01 am
In my heart, there is a little Haibane Renmei fangirl doing sommersaults.
What I think I’ve enjoyed the most is this new range of emotions that comes across Largo’s face… not that he doesn’t emote in MT, but this is different, and some of the drawings of him have been especially fantastic (and the rest, as I generally find with your more recent work, continue to be delightful).
MT was the first web comic I fell in love with, and I am thrilled whenever there is a new page, whatever day and whatever time.
July 18th, 2005 at 10:31 am
Hey theres no problem in the omake. I like the story. Battles between heaven and hell are the a sure recipe for a good manga or animie. Making a deeper story that makes people think is a good idea. Your doing a great job with the story. In fact, I would like it if you did more of these storys. The’re good for you too. They’ll help you get thoughts toghether while you concentrate on the bigger picture. You are doing a great job Mr. Gal
July 18th, 2005 at 2:36 pm
::hug:: like so many have said above, there are just a few who complain and many many more of us who really apreicate what you do. if all they want is nothing but funny with no substance then they aren’t worth your time worring over. ^.^ congrats to your sister, as well.
July 18th, 2005 at 3:42 pm
I have to say I am impressed with the Omake so far. I wasn’t sure what was going on at first, but reading around on the site and blog I figured it out.
Is there a way to have a link to a little explanation of what Omake is, and why you’re putting it up instead of the regular MT work? I had recommended the site to a few friends and they were confused as to the turn MT abruptly made(as was I).
I am very impressed I must say, being a relative newbie to all of this.
Keep up the great work.

I love the omake so far it’s really good it’s sad and i almost well up with tears but it’s because i really feel what is being shown. Great Job!
July 20th, 2005 at 11:48 am
Dude, no worries about drifting plot. And also, a break is needed from humor to get down to business and seriousness of a story. Tha same is true for any other story… This is just the relief point from the bust-a-gut stuff I’ve read, not unlike comic relief in dramatic or romantic stories.
I agree with other posts saying that the story and art has evolved for the better…
Good luck with Ch.7, dude…
