As most of you know, i use Adobe Illustrator (version 10 right now - i haven’t upgraded to CS or CS2 yet) and Photoshop (currently 7.0) for all of my work on Megatokyo. Great applications really, and i really like the way they work on the Mac platform. That is, until i finally upgraded to Tiger. That’s when the problems started.
After upgrading to Tiger, there were two things that became a problem. For some reason, it didn’t like my Epson 1280 printer (easily solved by getting a Epson Photo R300 - the 1280 was a wonky printer anyway, the R300 is much nicer) and Illustrator started crashing. A lot.
After a while i was able to discern that the problem always happened whenever i switched from Photoshop to Illustrator. Errors would pop up “the PDF file is having difficulties” and other things, which would quite often result in not only Illustrator shutting down, but Photoshop as well. I’ve been tearing my hair out over this for months, but today i think i finally discovered the problem. This is what i found while searching for answers about the problem:
“If you copy an object from Adobe Illustrator 10.0.3 and try to paste it into Photoshop 7.0.1 in Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger”, then Adobe Illustrator will crash and Photoshop will be unable to get the contents of the clipboard.”
Here is a link to the page - its down near the bottom where this comment is made. They say that if you turn off the copy PDF to clipboard the problem goes away. Gee, it did. How about that. Nice to finally have that problem solved. Here’s another link to info on it.
There is still one more problem that i think will not go away as a result of this fix, and i have read that its a problem with CS as well as 10. (there is something about this on MacOSXHints.com but i can’t reach the site for some reason to find the exact link)… anyways, an annoying problem that is cropping up now is that because of some kind of problem with Spotlight, Illustrator can’t delete the temporary files it creates, and as a result im ending up with tons of files named 049554934.pdf etc… at first i thought that the two problems were related, but it seems this isn’t the case. I can deal with manually deleting files, the crashing was getting annoying. Last night it cost me well over an hour worth of time in getting the comic up.
Anyways, all sorts of fun stuff to do today. Gotta finish prepping all the new stuff for the megagear store - the Boo army should be here very soon and i’ve got to have everything ready to go for when they do. Whee

I feel for you, I had the same problems with my scanner, not the same brand does the whole not communcating part at least. It cause me some much time of thinking what was wrong with it, but nothing says “fix-it” other than a hammer. Well I let you finsh you work, before I go on crazy rant.(God Bless America for Web Blogs, if its not use in the right intentions)
Well Peace
I need a scanner…
So… other than your incident, I bet you will like Tiger. How’s the nice new cat been treating ya so far? I hope good… I love Tiger.
Should some of us hold off on ordering a Boo for a week so that you’re not so overwhelmed with orders the day they go up in the store? ^_^
The joys of computers, there great when they work an there a pain when they dont. Although ma computer has learned to ph34r m3 when I mention taking a hammer to it, wierdist thing.
Oh an I disagree with Dom you aint a loli, I think she’s a cool character too
I use Photoshop 7.0 as well, and I have to say, it’s a slick program, especially since unlike PSP 7, it doesn’t take 28940710 hours of haggling for it to accept anti-aliased, Japanese characters as layers, which is -fun- when making text graphics. But, as far as your issue with Tiger goes, all I can say is, that’s what you get when you use a Mac, lol. I can’t say the PC platform is infinitely superior or anything, but I certainly haven’t had any graphics programs, and am very satisfied. I hope adding a Wacom to my arsenal won’t screw it up though. You know much about those, Fred?
I can’t find anything on it at MacOSXHints, but if I recall correctly, the issue is with Spotlight indexing the temp files so that when Illustrator does try to delete them, it can’t as the files are being used by another program (Spotlight). Hope that helps.
The joys of upgrading. Just when you get everything working together well, you get an upgrade and it spanners everything up. It’s in part this reason I have no plans to switch my Windows box from XP until I have to (which looks like being the day I’m forced to go 64 bit). If it works, and all that.
I use Illustraitor CS and Photoshop 6.0. The upgrades arn’t so awsome that you need to always switch, expecially when you can get done what you want on what you got. Those were the best when I started using them and I continue to use them.
Have you tried turning off Spotlight indexing for your temp files, Fred? I assume that Illustrator saves them all to a specific directory (can’t remember, haven’t used it in ages) - if so, you could disable spotlight for that location.
Open System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy. Drag the folder that your temp files are saved in to that window - Spotlight will now no longer index any new files created in that folder. Might just solve your problem.
It does not seem to be a problem for me yet. I am running CS2, however, so that might be it
Sorry for going off topic (I dont have a Mac, so I cant really contribute anyway (wish I did tho)) but….
YAY!!! The return of Yuki-chan! n_n
And she’s brought her sketchbook, and she looks like she means business!
I wasn’t able to read any of the webcomics I folow for the past couple of days, so it was a nice surprise to find 3 comics with her in!
Anyway, there’s my quick outburst of joy, I hope you can get past whatever computer problems you’re having at the moment, Fred.
Sorry again for going off topic…
