little white box of hate

If anyone remembers my “i tossed my ipod in the trash” rant a while back, I have an update to the story:

my Ipod still hates me.

The easy thing for me to do would be to just flat out call this device the most troublesome thing i’ve ever owned –but that isn’t really fair to Apple or the Ipod. The truth is i think it has had a defective hard drive since i got it. Once i got past the problems i was having, It worked more or less fine for several few months, enough so that i figured it was ok. Silly me. Recently its started to act up again, and it’s added a twist. Before, it would just crash itself and sometimes lock up my computer (easily fixable with a reboot) but this time it’s started to do something REALLY fun - its causing itunes to cease to function all together on my main desktop computer. ^^;;;

Basically, i tunes would start to load then just freeze, and all you could do was force quit it. I’ve had to re-install itunes twice now just to get it to start running. Crashes are one thing, breaking things so that they stop functioning when the ipod isn’t connected is bad. What this basically means - no plugging my ipod into my computer. Kinda renders it somewhat useless, yknow?

It’s sad, really. I like the thing, I just wish it worked better. Sure i could get it repaired, but that wouldn’t be cheap, and for something that really IS an ‘extra’ for me, i can’t justify it. I just wish I wasn’t one of the poor saps who got a bum one.

On a positive note… when i fixed Itunes yet again today i discovered that apple had FINALLY upgraded the look and feel of it. Finally. The changes are subtle, but they are nice. I used to use Winamp and SexyFont and other funky japanese plug-ins and had many megs worth of winamp skins… ah well, guess it wasn’t bound to last, and it was kind of a funny thing to be into :)

I don’t know much about the iPod’s warranty but when it first started messing up why didn’t you just return it? I had to do that with my Creative mp3 player when it’s HDD failed on me once. Not that bad all I had to cover was shipping one-way.

i know exactly how you feel.
my ipod fills me with such animosity on such a regular basis…and yet…i don’t think i could part with it to send it to apple.
    mine’s problems are battery-related, though…

anyway, my recommendation to you is re-installing the ipod software, if you can make your computer recognize it. one of the cds that came with it (ipod) should have the software you need.
    so..yeah.

    good luck.

Man, I just hate Itunes on PC. It makes many a celestial being cry. I’ll stick with Winamp since I paid for it :) I think I’m kind of glad that I didn’t get an mp3 player and got a MD player instead. I duno why, but I really like that thing.

Hi Fred. I’ve had the same problem - but I’m not running iTunes or Mac. I’m running juk on Linux.

I know it sounds unlikely that the same problem could haunt two very different systems but here’s my fix. After the music library application (juk in my case) crased, it would no longer start. It would show up on the screen, and then send up a nasty error.

The root of the problem was a corrupt music library. I moved the database temporarily (in case that made things worse, I could just move it back), and the applicaiton immediately started back up and created a fresh database of my files.

I don’t know if you’ve purchased any DRM’ed music from iTunes,(which might force you to really rethink wiping your database) but if not, I’d put money on the fact that regenerating your library (perhaps on both your computer and your ipod,) would clear up many of these problems.

Good luck with it! Maybe a friendly “patron” will put you up for a new Nano. Hell, apple should get you one considering how much you’d probably gush about it here and on MT.

If it is old enough, you could always just install Linux on it. :-D Maybe that would help.

Reminds me of my iPod’s click of death…

    The Story!

I was riding home on the bus one day. I get my iPod out and decide to listen to my favorite Podcast, ABC Nightline… I love Tedd Koppel. Anyways, I do the usual, and I click on the latest Podcast… well, the iPod freezed up. So, I reboot the thing, and guess what… the HDD started to make a clicking sound…

I ask for help from Apple, got charged 32 bucks for shipping, got an empty box from them, put my iPod in, and sent it off…

They replaced the iPod within a week… about 5 days… pretty quick considering they said it would take about two weeks.

The FedEx guy tried to deliver it the Friday before Katrina. Didn’t happen, left a note on my door. They said they’ll come back Monday.

    Monday, the hurricane happens.

    No deliveries…

I JUST got my iPod back yesterday. It’s shiny and new.

I just hope you get some kind of service from your pod… and if you decide to junk it, just get a nano… I really don’t see a need for a 20gb HDD if you are going to listen to only a few songs and podcasts… and, the nano has no HDD… so it can’t crash… easily.

    Yeah…

Well I’m now on my second ipod… My first one was great (3G 15gb) so when I decided that I needed more space to go with my new camera I plumped for 60gb Photo and passed on the old 3G.

Now much as I love the colour screen and am adapting to the clickwheel… this new one has developed a nasty habit of doing a hard shutdown whenever I leave it paused+hold in the middle of an audiobook. It then requires a select+menu+5sec reset to come back and of course it’s lost most everything since I last sync’d. (I haven’t had an oportunity to check if it loses any pics etc that I’ve transfered but…) I also have not done a rigorous check to see what other file types might cause the same problem but it does seem to happen occasionally with other files… I’m still trying to find a solution, and will be calling apple very soon if I don’t come up with anything…

But even so… I do love the thing.
