never pours, but…

Good grief, what is it with this month? I seem to be surrounded by equipment and software dumps. My Laptop is in for repairs, the forums wen’t plowie (needs a table repair which based on experience can take over two days to process) i can’t remember what i changed a password too recently and for the life of me i am gonna turn off auto fill so never have to do it again…

yeah, it’s been that kind of week. :) The comics this week have come out ok. They’re kind of awkward, and they have more to do with setup than me trying to zing people with story bombshells. As the pieces of Megatokyo have come together over the past few years, i’ve had odd gaps in things that are quite breach-able, but… they require some finesse to get them to the point i want them to be. These past two comics really gave me a headache, hopefully now that some of the issues covered in them can be put down to either groundwork red herrings, they are there :)

Have i mentioned that i feel… severely handicapped without my laptop?

Well, it could be worse. From a weather standpoint I am glad that we live in the relatively boring weather state of Michigan. All you folks down in the gulf coast region stay safe. (I’ve already been asked, but it’s worth mentioning… Megatokyo’s servers are in Texas, but they are in Dallas. Unless there is a 700 foot storm surge, Makoto, Nayuki, Saki, Natusme, Mai and Sayuri should be fine.)

hey fred. when r u getting the laptop fixed? ur doing a really good job w/ the comics. bye!

  2. stsparky says:

Heh. The comic works if we see Yuki defending Erika later on … I expect the two to bond. Which means they’ll focus on the “girlfriend” comment ASAP.

Many thanks for the sentiment. My parents already had to evacuate our Galveston County home and have come up to my college town to spend the next few days.

Anyway, let us know when your baby gets back. I’m curious how quickly Apple will handle it and such.

  4. vexx says:

it will be interesting to see how Yuki and Erika develop from this … as well as Junko and Largo (whom I’m speculating may end up a platonic pair of friends).

Its almost too bad you can just dump a chapter a month or some suchs schedule… but I’m shuttin up now…

    Except for Shuffle!
I’m having a great time with it…. pretty witty banter for a “harem anime”…. Asa-sempai is mwah!
(course Nerine is damn cute but we haven’t really gotten to see much of her story yet…

  5. Cura says:

I know how you feel fred without your computer…..I can’t live without mine either. Hopefully me AND my computer will be safe since we are here in Corpus Christi, Texas…..so yea.
Keep up the good work with the comics!!

  6. vexx says:

Last time I looked the cat 5 storm was mean enough to whomp most of the Texas coastline…… where the eye went in was almost irrelevant. All my friends and relatives there have headed inland….
    good luck to Cura ….

More on Shuffle! — also glad to see they’re not being ridiculously G-rated…. eps 7, 8, and 9 have been *interesting*….

  7. The Rapierman says:

From the Texan that may be affected, even if he was 150 miles inland: I’ll hang in there as long as I can. It’ll swing to within two counties east of me, where it’s expected that it will have already dropped to a Cat 1 hurricane. It’s still going to be hairy here in Austin.

Your servers are lucky. They’ll only experience a tropical low pressure system: Weak compared to what we’re about to experience.

Wish me luck. I’ll probably need it.

Cura: What are you doing down there!? Didn’t you get the mandatory evac orders? Get out now! Your computer is replaceable; you are not!

  8. The Rapierman says:

Update on Rita’s projected path is that it’s shifted further eastward. It looks like I’m safe. Galveston, unfortunately, is not. It’s going to get a direct hit. Fortunately, everyone’s already evacuated from that island.

At least I can breathe easier.

    Hey Fred!

I recommend an app called Steel to keep track of passwords. I would just about die without it. Amazing, cheap little shareware program.

    http://homepage.mac.com/gabrieledesimone/Steel/

I’ve also started using a cool method of keeping secure, unique passwords for online websites. It basically involves creating a master password that never leaves your computer–instead it is used to generate an MD5 hash based off the domain of the website you’re at. You make a bookmarklet with your password in it and just hit it when you’re at a login page. It generates your password and dumps it in the password field automatically. Really great, and really secure. Check it out:

My lunatic pal in Houston (he owns the THUNDER Agents) says he’s staying to keep the pets he owns “safe” - Aargh! Put them in traveling kennels and get the heck outta there! NOW!

I’m really worried about Xeos - (Konsekai Swordwaltzer - http://www.xerjester.com/). I’ve got chills reading that.

I have also got several emails similar to this:

“hi i am in seadrift right were the hercane is goin to hit the worst partso this is bad”

“this relly sux im not shur if im gona have a hous cus of rita t3h hercane wll l8erz”

and from many people who fled the coast. Even some people i know. It’s frightening. Even tho many of these people i dont know personally, they are readers and there is a connection that really hits home. To look and see that we’ve sent stuff to Gulfport, and Slidel, and to NO…

We’re worried about everyone down there, we really are. Please be safe.

  12. The Rapierman says:

    UPDATE ON RITA:

She’s lost some intensity and windspeed, dropping to CATEGORY FOUR. Additionally, her track has shifted further east, just a little closer to the Louisiana border and putting it on a direct line to Beaumont. Galveston and Houston will still feel the effects. Projected surge height is at 50 FEET. New Orleans might get a taste, given the size of the storm.

On the flip side, the shift further east means that I will not…repeat: WILL NOT…feel any of its effects. I’m in the clear.

Of course, I’ll be praying for the folks that aren’t so lucky. Interstate 45 is jam packed and there are reports of gasoline shortages as people are filling up and getting out…or, at least, trying to get out.

  13. geek.evolved says:

You are doing a very good job tying these two comics in to the whole story! I look forward to seeing friday’s comic!

Stay safe in Texas everyone, use your head :D

  14. vexx says:

phone systems appear to have gone to hell with the cell towers and telco trunk lines…. I can no longer get through to Houston or the surrounding areas from up here in Oregon — the streaming video of the traffic makes it clear a lot of people waited too long. Ah well …. here we go.

  15. Moshie says:

=T.T= i live in Houston…. right by the bay i had to flee to Austin XP my house is sooo gone….XD

  16. jakedaartist says:

Well, rita is probably going through a deintisification, and rebuilding cycle right now, but if it speeds up, it’ll fracture itself by hitting land, and that’ll weaken it. if it does intensify again, it’ll cause even more devistation then katrina did, hurricane wise. As for records, Rita is was the thrid most powerful hurricane recorded, as well as now holding the title of highest recorded hurricane wind gust, with a recorded 250 mph gust. I’ll have to verify this with some sources, but if thats true (i heard it on either the weather channel or foxnews, i’ve been watching both alot recently), then the storm is still probably capable of around 160 to 170 mph gusts, not sustained winds… anyways, its still in the 140 to 150 mph range in sustained windspeed.

  17. Queso says:

My family and I “were” going to evacuate. But the traffic is so bad they don’t want to leave and be caught on the road when the hurricane hits. Instead we’ll be going 10 miles “SOUTH” (two hours north east of Houston) to my grandmother’s house to be with the rest of my family. Wish us luck, I guess… :/

  18. The Rapierman says:

Moshie: Welcome to Austin. It’ll be okay. At least you’ll be alive.

Yep, just noticed that it’s gone down to 145. New projection puts landfall on the Louisiana border, but Beaumont will definitely take a hit.

  19. Cura says:

Thanks to you guys who are concerned, but number one the reason I stayed is because we don’t have anywhere to go. Or somewhere close enough at least.
2 is because were only going to get tropical storms and warnings. So that means were on watch…..because if turns BIG trouble for us.

P.S Good luck to all of you up there near Galveston if you didnt evacuate.

  20. Cura says:

Watching the weather channel….Update on hurricane Rita: Category four, Winds 140 mph and Traveling at 10 mph,….it was 9 mph, so it picked up by one. some people are coming here to Corpus Christi. Same as last time guys….good luck.

  21. The Rapierman says:

Gas is starting to run out in Austin. I just got to the station in time to fill up.

Start praying, guys. Life as we know it has come to an end.

  22. refugee says:

Fred, I’m sorry to use this thread for this purpose, but I may not get another chance for awhile. I literally cannot wait for the forums to go back up, since I too live in Houston.

On the new comic: Boo is trying to get Largo to look beyond the end of his nose and pay attention to Junko. I’ve repented of my earlier statement that he’d passed judgement on her: no such thing. He’s judged himself unworthy of judging others.

And that, folks, is likely the last you’ll see of me for at least a week, maybe two or three.

Of all the things I’m going to miss for the next little while, you guys come in right after water, food, and shelter.

[hoping hard not to live up to my nick...]

  23. The Rapierman says:

Refugee, you’re in my prayers. Stay safe, dude.

FWIW, I partially agree with the assessment, and I have further analysis on the new strip that I’ve typed up in a text file. It’ll probably have to wait unless Fred wants to see it via email. I may even look into setting up a temporary board until the forums come back up, assuming that nobody has a problem with that.

  24. Lplus says:

Hmmmm - breach-able? Perhaps you mean closeable, Fred, as in closeable gaps??

and just which are the red herrings? :-P
To all you Southern USA people, Good Luck and stay safe.

To Refugee, I thought Boo had ambushed LArgo outside the 1Y arcade because that was what revived him last time. It looked as though Junko was following LAtgo for reasons yet unknown.

  25. himeno says:

Hey this is your comic fan! your comic is great, and good luck on your laptop! waiting for your new entry :)

  26. stsparky says:

Damn! Worried about the folks on the Gulf. Hope folks were able to get to safety.
    ====
Largo’s anatomy will need to be revisited. Boo stopped the ‘walkabout’ tho … and I did hit the mark with Junko’s following him. off to the IRC channels then!

  27. WhiteKnight says:

Largo hit the deck in front of THE arcade. I rather doubt that l33t d00d is going to make an appearance anytime soon. I like the way Junko is holding her shin as she squats down to look at Largo. Makes her look sort of vulnerable
