a little less of a ‘wai’

Well, i’d love to say things are back to normal, everything is working, etc, but… it’s not. The good news is that the comic is back, and i’m going to try my damnedest to not have to miss any more comics because of book 4 work. I’m not saying it wont happen, i’m just gonna try. I’m trying to take a more ‘realistic’ approach to things these days. :P

I would like to apologize for the situation with the forums. I’ve been pushing my goons every day to get some progress on them - its not fair that they should be down for so long. Like i said, however, the nice thing is that when they are up, they will be updated and humming along on new machines. Thanks for your patience.

As for the book? Ugh, i still have tons to do. The good news is that things are looking good, i’ve made a few changes and tweaked some things for the book version that fix a few minor gaffs in the web version. I’m pretty happy with the set. In fact, its been more pleasure working on this book than any of the others so far. I actually *like* some of the comics and story arcs in this book :P I do have to push a little harder to finish the processing, because i have GOT to get back to working on the circuity remake, or i am going to really miss my deadline.

Trying to set up my Ebay auction for the 4 two week dpds right now, I’m figuring i’ll start the auction on Thursday and end it at Noon on Saturday or Sunday the 15th or 16th, not sure yet. Whee.

In other news, i was asked by a reader why i wasn’t also psyched up about the upcoming Clannad movie. This made me blink, because i nor any of my friends had come across this news. After a quick google search i discovered that there is indeed a Clannad movie in the works - by Toei animation no less. (you can tell i haven’t been reading ANN as closely as i should be recently :P). The official announcement stuffs can be seen here. I’m not gonna fanboy over this as much as the KyoAni remake of Clannad because, well, the nice part about it is its a remake of the Toei version which was kinda mediocre. Yet who knows, it might come out decent, you never know. Movies do have higher budgets.

  1. jeegs! MOOOEEEHHH!!! im asking for your permission to use your comic, megatokyo for some of my site’s graphics. pleeeeaassseee take this into consideration!!!! -Moeh and Piro, forever.

  2. Kaelis Ra says:

Mwah? KyoAni was remaking Kanon weren’t they? It’ll be good to ses some nice art for Kanon… the old series looked a bit… bung to me. Despite which I am on at least my fourth time seeing it. If it comes out anywhere near as briliant as Air, I’ll be happy.

  3. Shaggy says:

Great…a Clannad movie. Another thing to taunt me with. :)

  4. Brenden says:

glad you’re up and running again, Fred. even if it is under pressure.

    keep it up!

    a fan always,

    1) I’m enjoying the hell out of Karin, REC, and Kashimashi (the latter surprises me that I enjoy it). REC I’ve decided to buy the manga of - I like a story written by the people who live that business as well as the Grant/Hepburn homage (echoes of Kimiko :) ). Appreciate you mentioning them. I’m also quite a fan of Lamune, that Furudanuki pointed out to me on the animesuki forums.

    2) Kudos for expanding your store to support two other comics I’m rather fond of (applegeeks and underpower). The angst-thulu must be mine! (to quote Dorktower).

    3) Nice tight artwork and camera framing on the latest strip … Kimiko’s spunky coworker is very, very on the ball (her expressions nail the situation nicely) — I won’t deny I prefer the strip in full “romantic dramedy” mode. The other stuff makes great background but like the better mecha series — doesn’t focus on the props but on the relationships and the character studies.

best of luck on your circuity project! I’m eager to have MT Vol4 in my hands.

…I can’t remember the last time I logged into the MT forum…or really wanted to……I forgot it was there. Or maybe my mind blocked its existence from memory. hmm….

glad you’re back on the mt storyline. keep up the great/awesome work (please =).

also, was wondering how you and the two guys at Applegeeks got to know eachother. I remember a few years back there was an applegeeks guest strip or two (?), so I visited applegeeks.com and read that..but I don’t really know how applegeeks was able to get into the megagear store. after you’ve caught up (if you ever do?) with your current projects, maybe you could explain that to me. big if, but I’m just curious.

    Thank you Mr. Gallagher.

There’s a wonderful dissection of Megatokyo on the very recent Anime World Order podcast #13. It’s a long show but their critique comes very early on in response to an email question, so you don’t have to wait long to hear their salient thoughts about Fred or the series. You may not like what you hear.

Episode #13 (not the brand new one, the one just before that)

  9. vexx says:

hmmmm, you have a different definition of “wonderful” and “salient” than I do.
Mainly, Fred clearly burns a *lot* of energy on Megatokyo (a direct contradiction of “not much effort in for success realized”) … it would be more accurate to say his productivity for energy expended isn’t a very efficient burnrate (as Fred well knows as he tortures himself over every pencil stroke :) )

The site itself is an interesting experiment and they seem to put a lot of energy into it — I’ll critique them by saying some practice dropping what speech coaches call “verbal static” would be useful (”Um”, “ah”, content-free slang, grammar).
They say up front they’re just three people with opinions and passion about their topic. I’ll visit them more thoroughly when I have a moment to check out the rest of their site.

  10. fredrin says:

One thing i’ve learned is to never listen to people ‘disect’ your work. I’m well aware that 90% of the people out there, especially self-ascribed ‘experts’ feel that i ‘don’t deserve’ the attention that i or Megatokyo gets. Listening or reading people rip into your work is not something that makes you feel good about what you do, especially when you yourself are insecure about your work.

The only defense i have against the ‘experts’ is that regardless of what they think of Megatokyo, no one has ever been forced to pay for it only to discover later that they were screwed. The worst i think someone can do is read a few episodes and waste some time in finally realizing that they dont like it. As for everyone else, those readers who for some bizzare reason DO like it and aren’t hell bent on telling me how to do my job… maybe the experts should ask them why they like it, and leave me alone.

  11. Somebody Else says:

I wasn’t interested in other people’s disection of Megatokyo, especially when the surgeons themselves have no relation to Megatokyo’s inner workings. The request was directed to Fred Gallagher, Megatokyo Artist and Storyliner. I appreciate the effort, ‘robot ik,’ however I’m more interested in keeping the MT artist comfortable; thanks anyways.

  12. Philweasel says:

I often feel that the ‘experts’ have this little book called “How to make something good” with a detailed checklist inserted in the middle. Why do I like Megatokyo? Sorry, but I’ve always considered it a bit of a boring and pointless question, though just as annoying as “Why don’t you like Megatokyo?”

Can’t we just enjoy ourselves without having to pimp our own interests or dump on others for the sake of our own egos?

  13. Brenden says:

    !!!!!!

I’m listening to the podcast right now, and I can’t believe what they’re saying!! I know they warn before hand that what they say might be offensive, but… as a huge fan of Megatokyo, its insulting.

    Very insulting.

    In fact, can’t listen anymore…

  14. Somebody Else says:

Still haven’t listened to it; maybe I should though, just to see how anybody can disrespect Fred’s work besides excusable delay in strip posting (…), DPD’s (wow), SGD’s (eww), etc. which are essentially part of MegaTokyo’s brilliance. As a member of the MegaTokyo Fanclub

  15. Brenden Turney says:

hmm.. i suppose it must’ve been pirogoeth, but it looked alot like Erika for some reason. though Erika, well we have no implication, does not play Endgames.

    whatever.

  16. Somebody Else says:

    ……………
    ….
    [in awe]

  17. vexx says:

aye, we’re finally getting the official canon on how Pirogoeth and Largo met in the Endgames world (I wonder if this is Piro and Largo’s first encounter ever… period in real life or VR).
Seems like “Niho” probably ingratiated his way into the kingdom and then sucked it dry from within. Only Piro’s unconscious skills in emo-stats saved him/Pirogoeth.

Now I’m torn… the Anna Miller sequence is great but I want to see the Endgames story as well.

As far as Erika…. it has gotten pretty clear that the virtual character Pirogoeth and real life Erika have some of the same qualities. Its just that Pirogoeth is an avatar of Piro (we can assume that Piro can roleplay those qualities if not exhibit them in RL).

  18. Jinto says:

Glad to see the MT forums back up, even thou I’ve never post. I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but it sounds rather disturbing to hear someone dis a creative project like MT. Kudos to you Fred for your total lack of intrest in it (just play it off). I had the same reaction to the Pirogoeth character from 844 comic. Looking at them side-by-side its hard to tell the difference.
    Jinto Lin

P.S. No one forced me to read the entire archive, but I did it anyway, because I’m that interested in the story.

  19. vexx says:

ARGHHHHH… Fred… drop what you’re doing, screw the comic - download and watch the first two eps of “The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi”

I discovered it a couple of days ago… apparently the MT AMC forum is going nuts about it as well.

AIR quality animation (outside of the student film parts), very witty…. and Suzumiya can pull my tie any time — though Mikuru will probably draw your attention more.

  20. Somebody Else says:

That was really nice of Hawk and Ananth to put that together..heh, and they’re makin sure to forward traffic to mt when the auctions are about to end…perfect timing.

Thanks for tryin to keep the MT storyline afloat. You’ve done an awesome job, Mr. Gallagher. Try to match mt’s greatness in Circuity! I’ve got my ten bucks set aside for MT 4.

  21. Kyle says:

    1) The real question is whom here ISN’T excited about Kanon 2006 and the Clannad movie? This is the reason we learn japanese, people!
    2) As for ‘the experts’ - ‘the experts’ said I wouldn’t last one day in Canada, ‘the experts’ said that Canada was a desolate wasteland, ‘the experts’ said my immigration consultancy firm wasn’t going to take off. What do ‘the experts’ know?
    3) I’ve got the money set aside for the MT book as well as the GST I will have to pay to get it imported into Canada.

  22. vexx says:

@[846] — nice end-game drawings. This is nice exposition that leads us to understand what kind of female personality archetype Largo prefers … and it isn’t the one Erika initially mistakenly assumes.

I particularly liked the frame with little petite Pirogoeth mending Largo (just before she nukes him again in irritation) :) how… “parallel” :)
Hope you got a chance to see eps 1 and 2 of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” … its… simply beautiful (and insane, energetic, funny, witty … pardon me while I vibrate off a cliff).
If not, watch it over that hijacked-pagan holiday we’re about to have…

  23. vexx says:

sorry for the double post … out of curiousity I thumbed the SD to see how Alpicola is doing and made the mistake of browsing today’s strip thread.

Now my brain hurts from the number of “can’t connect the dots” failed-at-basic-literature posts. Maybe I’ll stay on sabbatical longer…

  24. Jinto says:

Loved todays strip, not to mention the AppleGeeks guest strip. I have got to say that the guest strip and the recent story twist on AppleGeeks has me wandering, will there be anymore crossing of MT and AppleGeeks on there own sites. I think having the two intertwined would pose more than a few problems, but would be well worth it.

    -Jinto

Sorry for the ignorance, but my eye twitches when I look under “Trackback Pings” …and thus my curiosity strikes again. What are these “Trackback Pings” and why are the phrases: “hentai,” “xxx,” “anal fisting,” and “pregnant cartoons” found in a Fredart blog?

    (Thought I’d ask =)

  26. Brenden says:

eheh. I was wondering myself. How do those get up there anyhow?

I guess I’m just not quite sure what a trackback ping is.

    ————
Great work on [846]!! the text is perfect. expecially love the end comment, “Ican’t imagine why”.. after its pretext, ..perfect. too funny.

thanks for all you’re effort, Fred.

  27. fredrin says:

    Somebody Else:

I wondered what you were talking about - then i saw. Somehow, the ‘trackback pings’ was set to ‘allow’ for this particular post - an accident. As a result, of course, it just opened the blog up to tons of comment and trackback spam. i am VERY sorry about that. It has all been deleted, and the trackback turned to “off” like it is supposed to be >_< It pisses me the fuck off whenever i see spam of this kind on my site. the people who do this shit have some fucking nerve.

Anyways, sorry about that. Been way too busy to check the website much in recent days. Comment spam gets through sometimes, but i have been pretty good at catching it.

    thanks!

  28. Amanda Davis says:

I haven’t listened to that podcast and I don’t really plan to.

Fred, I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that MT vol 4 is well worth a few missed strips.(I hope I’m not anyway.) Ganbatte! = Good luck/you can do it!

Also…I’ve been wondering about the “rin” in “Fredrin”; what is it/what does it mean if anything?

  29. Somebody Else says:

Thanks for the Circuity preview. I’ve been staring at the glimpse of rewound…(for a few minutes =)

Wish you didn’t have to do so much for the book’s format, but hey! It’ll be done soon and you’ll have everything ready after MT_IV.

I thought that the patches on her skirt (from rewound glimpse) were a nice touch…you do an extraordinary job on background (or is it foreground?)….scenery…stuff…..things.

I guess there’s a few things that I am curious about, but I’m not interested in having them answered at the cost of MT_IV delay.
    Here are the questions:
–How did you and the two guys at Applegeeks get to know eachother?
    –What are trackback pings?
–$10,150 in auctions! (Gratz (!)) Are you going to celebrate MT_IV’s completion?

    Back to staring. Alohai~

Congratulations on the auctions. Looks like I’m not the only insane one in the world ;D
