Wonders never cease. I was only 27 min late with todays comic. Nothing makes me feel better than actually getting the comics DONE more or less on time. I’ve been feeling really pretty good about my art recently (except for Monday’s comic, which really suffered more from a few missing panels not super bad art - please note that i edited and updated that strip yesterday - i was on a roll last night :P) and even the emotive impact of my short range story stuff is good. Overall… the flow isn’t that great, and the story feels crowded and overloaded.
I really feel like i don’t spend enough time thinking sometimes. I’m always rushing to get things done, and there is never any meandering in the production of things. Of course, if i was to try to hold off till i had time to think about it i’d have the same situation i have with warmth - lots of off an on development, but very little actual progress. If there is one thing i’d like to change about me and my work, its my ability to have more follow through in my planning so that when i start drawing, im going steps further than where i am now because im further down the path with my drawngs.
On a side note, i finally broke out my COPIC markers today and did some scribbling. What i produced was pretty crappy looking, BUT i really like the feel of them. I’m not good at computer coloring because there is just no feel in it for me, in the tablet. There’s something far more visceral in sketching in color the same way i sketch in pencil. I have high hopes for this method of coloring to help me produce soft, me-styled colorizations in the future. We’ll see.

Here is something to try with your tablet.
Take a piece of paper and tape it to the TOP of the plastic drawing surface. I have found that this makes a world of difference in how it feels when sketching. It provides just enough resistance to make things feel right.
Sometimes I use a piece of tracing paper, but usually I just use a 11×17 piece of copy paper.
What are COPIC markers, anyway?
There coloring markers I think… all I know is that Fred uses them sometimes.
At the Megagear Store, under Art Gear, COPIC markers are sold. Clicking on one od the sets should give you both a visual and (potentially) an explaination.
[857] — brilliant… he has Erika hooked, he reels her in… and then falls out of the boat. Though I can’t predict her reaction I’ll hope its too enlighten him on his Peter Pan reaction to adult feelings
Last few strips were interesting enough to make me check the MDT for reactions…. now I’m sorry I did. Ever watch a discussion requiring some expertise between idiots? Rather quickly you find yourself embarrassed for supporting *any* of the positions being asserted. I’d have gone for the bans….
and far more quickly.
Heya, I’ve read some of Megatokyo at the library. ^^ I like Largo, he’s psycho, but awesome.
I have tips for your Photoshop7 coloring, even if it’s not the same as oekaki boards: go to http://www.oekakicentral.com and browse through the pictures and tutorials there, especially GemiAnge’s website (check The Tennis Court). Hopefully you’ll pick up tips on coloring, even if they’re totally different tools from Photoshop. ^^
I’ve never used COPIC markers, but maybe in the near future. ^^
I’d be really curious to hear what you think of COPICs as you continue to experiment with them. I’ve had a on again/off again thing with them. I really like the interchangability and customization possible with them–especailly like it that you can basically mix up your own marker color, but I find the alcohol based stuff weird to work with. I’d be curious to hear how you find blending the colors with them as well. When it’s done right, it looks great, when it’s done wrong…well…. Anyway, Fred, do you ever experiment with watercolor in your color work? I’ve actually had more luck getting the ‘feel’ I like with water color as opposed to copics, but hey, we’re all different.
I have techno fear when it comes to coloring in photoshop and im my job is in graphic arts. I much prefer coloring with pencils or using light washes with golden paint.
Anyway, one of the great things about sketch drawing is that you get to see the process the artist went through to get to the finish. It seems so sterile to see artwork that has been erased and all contour drawing.
Soft feel?…I dont like COPIC marker’s…they’re color is too…dead… I enjoy color pencils, prisma is the best. They give you a NICE soft feel. Try it sometime…
