gears

Nothing like changing gears and moving onto another thread in a story. When I got tripped up about Mondays comic i was concerned that the differences between what was happening with Largo/Erika and Piro/Kimiko (you know, fanciful retelling of a great battle to dealing with a horde of slathering fanboys in the japanese equivalent of a Denny’s restaurant) was not working because if it was it would just flow right, right? Since my creative flow was suddenly tripped up, i had somehow screwed things up, right?

Not really, actually. The more i thought about it the more i realized it was just transition of thought, not the flow, that was giving me headaches. It’s my job as the writer and the art person to smooth it all out and make the transition between theads smooth for the reader and mold things in ways that enable you to see what i’ve been trying to bring to the surface. I guess thats what writers really do – take ideas and lay them out so that the reader can take them in.

I had a real good flow going with the Largo Erika stuff, and it would be so much easier for me just to keep going with it and not make that jump. But that arc has hit the point where i need to jump into the mess that is the Anna Millers restaurant in Meguro now and i just have to roll up my sleves and do it :P

BTW, i really was exhausted from the trip. Thursday night i never did go to bed – i finished the comic, packed, and headed for the airport, then after arriving in DC i went pretty much right to the booth and a few hours later did my signing. One problem with getting tired like that is you never really catch up, especially when you are trying hard to be on the ball and active for the following days. When i got home sunday i was soooo ready to just curl up in a ball and sleep. I think i’m getting old.

:)

As long as your creativity stays fresh, it doesn’t matter how old you get! You’re just REALLY hardworking and needed to catch up.

Looking forward to what you have planned for this transition to Piro & Kimiko ^^

I’m also looking forward to see what’s going on at Anna Miller’s again. It’s been a while.

And Fred, you really don’t have to worry about getting old. You already are ;)

makes me wonder again…. and thats a bad thing. Its ok fred… my mind makes a person with Alzimers look like Webster. “worst memory in existence”

So… back to Anna millers…. I am curious to see how much Piro can take before something happens that just might make him snap?

    snap….. oh right…. my poster… nvm…

now time for the ever so short Dear Fred letter…. ahem…

    Dear Fred,
Yor work is wonderful… im nearly addicted to it since my life has little to nothing to do at this time. I always look forward to new things. BYE BYE!

    Sincerly,
    Akumu Sky.

I think the switch from Largo and Erika to Piro and Kimiko worked out perfectly. The contrast in situations and circumstances really snaps me from one scene to the next.

While on one hand, I’m squirming in my seat to know what’s coming next for one of them. On the other hand, I get to see what had me squirming last.

^^; If that makes any sense.

I know what you mean by non stop motion and just wanting to collapse and sleep. he he.
    No worries, you’ll manage.
I’ve been here since the 4 panels, so I know you’ll do well.
Can’t wait for what happens next.

Yeesh, if *you’re* getting old, what does that make me? I’m only 19 and I spend all my time wishing I could get a bit more sleep… I blame engineering school, it seems to do terrible things to a guy’s sleep patterns.
Got a friend of mine started on Megatokyo. He refused to leave his room for a day because he wanted to get caught up :)

Flipping the pages from E&L’s little walk to the present… I’d say the transitions work fine especially the one from E&L back to Anna Millers. The Endgames flashback still seems a bit long but damn me if I have any idea how you’d alter it (for other posters, I love the Endgames sequences but as any director will tell you, no matter how much you love a scene – if it breaks the flow or momentum – you should think again).
The Monday strip was stellar from a story viewpoint — yay, a “real” reaction instead of an anime cliche. One of the things I like about MT is the subtle shredding of anime cliches.

I can’t remember if you’d ever mentioned this but I tripped across a little series about a month ago called Petopeto-san. Its really a beautiful little bittersweet triangle romance hiding under the comedy aspects and skewering of racist views. The fansub group has done all but the last episode now. I picked up the OSTs as well – there are some lovely pieces in it ranging from JP traditional to violin waltzes to sleazy cabaret jazz to… anyway.

awww Piro-saaaan!!! *whiny cute girl stereotype Allison mode initiated*

Fred, I’m constantly in awe of your work. You have developed into quite the author. You keep us on the edge of our rolly computer chairs minutes before the update deadline, constantly hitting the refresh button on our poor, overworked internet browsers. You inspire us to write and draw and develop characters and storylines of our own. You make sure there’s always enough Megatokyo merchandise to keep us rabid fangirls (and fanboys!) satisfied and amused. You make us write silly little comments on your blog saying how much we adore you. ‘Anna Millers’ is coming along quite well. (GASP! KIMIKO-SAAAAAN!!!!!) I’m anxiously waiting to see how the plot will unfurl! (WHAT’S SHE GONNA DO!? HOW ARE THE FANBOYS GONNA REACT!?!?)

    Oi. *kills whiny Allison-chan*

Luck and love from a crazed fangirl.

Hey, I know this is a bit off topic but I thought id mention in case you werent aware, but Otakon has seiyuu Ayako Kawasumi who upon reading her bio (as i dont follow seiyuu as closely as some others) I learned was “Mahoro in Mahoromatic, …Kaori in Kanon…Akari in To Heart…Aoi Sakuraba in Ai Yori Aoshi…and has also performed theme songs for Mahoromatic, Piano, To Heart..” and was the game voice of “Saber in Fate/Stay Night”.

If you allready knew she was attending, etc, sorry for the repeat info/waste of time, Ijust remembered youre a fan of those series and thought you might want to know, in case you weren’t aware of her attendance.

Hi. I noticed you metioned getting your wisdom teeth pulled soon. When I got mine pulled the pharmacist who was filling my Vicadin prescription (for the wisdom teeth) asked me what else I was taking. When I told him Advil he said to take four every six hours because Ibuprofin is good for inflammation and pain. I ended up only taking the Advil and never touched the Vicadin.

    Good luck with the teeth!

I might have to post this again when this blog is updated, but as to the latest rant on the main MT site:

    You tell ‘em Fred!

(said in reference to the non-apologetic stance)

I’m not ‘knowledgeable/experienced’ with the world of adult themed doujinshi, but I agree with you Fred. Fan work should not debase the characters the fan claims to love.

actually i was surprised that fred made blurry at all. i remember him saying he would completely stop megatokyo if his characters became a part of hentai. but …i dont think that would even count as hentai (as the majority of hentai is how piro said is either riduculous or violent), and hopefully he continues working on blurry. (not that anyone cares but for the record i havent seen a doujinshi that doesnt degrade the main characters)

    1) “hentai” does not equal nudity or sex — thats fanboy misuse. It refers to “perversion” (tentacles, rape, bondage, etc) of an explicit sort.
    2) “echhi” just means sexy, erotic of an average sort and can include sex as well as just cheesecake (example:the anime series Futari Echhi)

The blurry stuff is just cheesecake…. mild ecchi. This whole thing is just such a non-starter that I’m wondering what kind of 9 year old minds think they had some scandal going.

    In other news:
glad to hear the wisdom teeth went well …. I can think of something else you could extract and improve your life immensely but I PM’d you on that.

    Storyline:
Piro may be “out of line” but he’s “on target”. When the fanboy “called in a favor” I was expecting something more malevolent. If that is the best they can do, Piro is on solid ground. I suspect the biggest looming problem will the stalker-paparazzi aspects of these losers in the following weeks.

I’m kind of curious — in the real world seiyuu often have husbands or boyfriends with no real impact on their popularity so I’m not real sure where this is going — ah well.
